Caves, Water and Waterfalls

At To-Sua Ocean Trench, the pool is 30 meters deep. A long ladder leads to a platform in the pool. There is also a cave that leads to the open sea; it is recommended for experienced divers. For planning purposes, the details are distinct: the ladder and platform are part of the pool, while the recommendation for experienced divers refers to the cave.

Samoa comprises ten islands, four of which are inhabited: Upolu, Savai’i, Apolima and Manono. To-Sua Ocean Trench is on Upolu in Lotofaga. This location places the natural attraction within the island nation.

Piula Cave Pool is on the Main East Coast Road, by Piula Theological College in the village of Lufilufi. Its underwater cave is connected to a second cave. There are day fales and toilets at Piula Cave Pool; since facilities can change, it is best to confirm their availability locally before you arrive.

Papase’ea Sliding Rocks are in Se’ese’e in the Faleata district and have two sliding areas: one for children and one for adults. At Sopoaga Waterfall, there is an area for demonstrations of umu preparation and coconut husking. The two attractions therefore have different focuses: separate sliding areas on the one hand, demonstrations on the other. Afu Aau Waterfall and Olemoe Falls refer to the same waterfall.

Samoan Tradition and Apia

According to Samoan tradition, Pa Sopo’ia Cave is considered an ancient route along which the spirits of the ancestors travel to Devil’s Haden at Cape Mulinu’u. In the tradition, this is their final meeting place before Pulotu, the spirit world. The cave’s cultural significance lies in this story of the route and its named places.

The Robert Louis Stevenson Museum is described as the place where the Scottish poet and author Robert Louis Stevenson fell in love. Samoa Cultural Village is on Beach Road in the center of Apia. The two Apia references are clearly distinct: one is biographical, while the other gives a specific location in the city center.

A popular walking trail in Apia leads to Robert Louis Stevenson’s grave and offers views of Samoa’s capital. If you plan to take the trail, check access in advance.

Trip-Planning Guide

Palolo Deep Marine Reserve is a five-minute walk from the center of Apia. Papase’ea Sliding Rocks are about a 15-minute drive from Apia, and Piula Cave Pool is around 45 minutes away. These times are approximate guides; actual travel time may vary depending on conditions. The comparison helps distinguish a short walk in the center from longer journey times.
