Wellington City offers a range of options to consider when planning your trip: regenerating forest, trails with scenic views, museums and places to enjoy food and chocolate. You can balance nature experiences and culture according to your interests, without combining them into a single outing.

Forest, Gardens and Trails

Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne covers 225 hectares of regenerating forest and bird habitats in Wellington. During daylight hours, general admission provides access to 32 kilometres of interconnected trails. Guided tours are available during the day, at night and at dusk, as well as photography tours and tours specifically designed for children. Free electric shuttles run from Wellington i-SITE and the Cable Car’s summit station to the sanctuary and back. Check the timetable and tour options before your trip.

At Wellington Botanic Garden ki Paekākā, protected native forest, plant collections and flower beds are set against views across Wellington. The garden covers 25 hectares; the Bush Walk passes through native New Zealand bush. For a different perspective, the Mount Victoria Lookout Walkway runs through historic pine forests to panoramic views of Wellington Harbour and the city.

The Southern Walkway begins at Roseneath Park and Lookout near central Wellington, passes through the Town Belt and extends to Island Bay. The southern section is open to pedestrians and cyclists. The trails therefore differ not only in scenery, but also in their described routes and permitted uses.

Cable Car and City History

The Wellington Cable Car connects Lambton Quay, Victoria University and the Botanic Garden in a five-minute ride. Its route is 612 metres long, and the summit station is 120 metres above sea level. Service information may change, so it is worth checking the connections before your trip.

The Wellington Cable Car Museum offers a dedicated look at transport technology. Housed in the original winding house, it spans three floors and tells the story of how Wellington’s cable car system developed. You can complement a Cable Car ride with a museum visit devoted specifically to this form of transport.

The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa is New Zealand’s national museum on the Wellington waterfront. Guided tours include an introduction to the museum and a tour of the award-winning Gallipoli exhibition by Wētā Workshop. As tour options may change, check which tours are available before your visit.

Culture, Tours and Special Experiences

Wellington Museum regularly hosts events, lunchtime talks, music events, workshops and temporary exhibitions. The programme changes; its recurring formats offer different ways to experience a museum visit. At Te Wharewaka o Pōneke, the programme includes guided walks and e-bike and e-scooter tours covering Wellington’s early history and cultural background. The guided waka tour introduces the Māori art of navigation and covers basic commands, songs, haka and greetings. Check the current tour formats in advance.

Te Nukuao Wellington Zoo is another option in its own right: it covers 13 hectares and is home to more than 500 animals. The animal count may change over time.

Market and Chocolate

Harbourside Market is an open-air food and produce market on Wellington’s waterfront. It has been at its waterside location since 2002. Market formats and vendors may change. Wellington Chocolate Factory offers a different focus: it makes small-batch, bean-to-bar chocolate using fair-trade cocoa. Factory tours explain how cocoa beans are sorted and ground, how chocolate is tempered and how bars are packaged. Visitors can also make their own bars under the guidance of experienced chocolatiers. Check in advance whether tours and workshops are available during your visit.
