Upper Hutt City offers a variety of experiences: riverside trails, parks with their own distinct features, culture and traces of history. When planning, it’s worth choosing specific places based on what you’d like to do—whether that means getting outdoors, visiting exhibitions or experiencing a seasonal festival.

Nature trails, rivers and views

Harcourt Park is a starting point for the Hutt River Trail. This easy scenic trail, suitable for walking and cycling, provides access to the Hutt River for swimming, fishing and kayaking. Harcourt Park also has a children’s cycling track and disc golf. At Kaitoke Regional Park, you can swim or kayak in the Pākuratahi River and take day walks through lush forest. The park is also the filming location for Rivendell in “The Lord of the Rings.”

One clearly defined hiking option is the Ridge Track in Kaitoke Regional Park: it is 7.5 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty and passes through beech forest. Along the way, there are views of the water supply lakes and the Upper Hutt Valley. Check current conditions and the track grading before setting out. Those interested in former railway routes can explore a different kind of trail on the Remutaka Rail Trail: this gently ascending 18-kilometre route is suitable for walking, running or mountain biking; access from Upper Hutt is via Pakuratahi Forest. Information panels tell the story of the former railway line, alongside restored railway bridges and historic tunnels.

Several challenging walking tracks through bush and forest are found in Keith George Memorial Park and Silverstream Scenic Reserve. For a different perspective on the landscape, visit Maidstone Park: above the park, Brett Latimer Lookout offers panoramic views of Upper Hutt City and the Hutt Valley. The Wellington Fault crush zone runs through California Park. It is signposted and visible as depressions in the terrain.

Parks for a range of activities

Trentham Memorial Park combines several bush tracks through Barton Bush and Domain Bushes with a playground. The playground has two large play castles and a 4.5-metre-high mega swing. At Maidstone Park, Maidstone Max Adventure Playground features accessible play equipment, ramp access to the castle, sand play and musical play. The same park also has a purpose-built 1,100-metre downhill mountain bike track. Play and park facilities may change, so it’s worth checking the latest information before your visit.

Culture, history and seasonal experiences

Whirinaki Whare Taonga is a free public arts centre for art, culture, history and entertainment. Five galleries host a changing programme of exhibitions. The centre is a five-minute walk from Upper Hutt railway station. If exhibitions are important to your stay, you can include the current programme in your plans.

In Trentham stands the Upper Hutt Blockhouse, built in 1860 and a rare surviving example of this type of defensive building in New Zealand. For a seasonal event, visit Blossom Valley at Aston Norwood Gardens in Kaitoke: the annual spring festival celebrates the flowering of hundreds of cherry trees. The exact flowering time varies from season to season, so check the festival dates and flowering status before planning your visit.

Staglands Wildlife Reserve offers a free feeding tour every day around lunchtime. As the schedule may change, it’s a good idea to check it before your visit. Brewtown, meanwhile, brings together several craft breweries, entertainment venues and a boutique distillery; the craft beer village is within walking distance of Upper Hutt railway station. Activities listed there include axe throwing, escape rooms, go-karting, bowling and mini golf. Individual businesses may change, so check what’s currently available if you have a particular activity in mind.
