Tairua: Harbour, Estuary and Coast

When looking for a hotel in Tairua, you can start by considering whether the harbour, estuary, Paku or Ocean Beach should be a landmark for your stay. Paku is the twin-peaked mountain at the head of Tairua Harbour, where the estuary flows into the sea. Sheltered by the headland offshore, the harbour offers protected waters for sailing, kayaking and windsurfing. Surfing and swimming are possible at Ocean Beach in Tairua. If you plan to swim, check the conditions locally.

Boat Ramp and Estuary

For boating, the Tairua Boat Ramp is a useful landmark: it is on the western side of Tairua Harbour and is a relatively large concrete facility. It offers access at all tides and has two floating pontoons for loading and unloading; it is suitable for boats up to 9 m. Fees, navigation conditions and access rules may change. Check these details before using the ramp.

The Tairua estuary offers gentle, peaceful walks. Almost 60 bird species are found in, around and above the estuary; the number may vary depending on the scope of the survey.

Walks and Visitor Facilities

A new toilet block with eight toilets, including two accessible toilets, was completed at Pepe Reserve in Tairua in May 2021. It replaced the previous facility.

The Whenuakite Kauri Loop Walk is about 8 km north of Tairua. The return walk through a remnant stand of kauri trees takes about an hour. If you plan to walk the track, check current track conditions beforehand.

The wider Thames-Coromandel District

The wider Thames-Coromandel District features dramatic topography and coastline, native forests and diverse coastal settlements. It has about 2,000 hectares of parks and protected areas. The Hauraki Rail Trail is 160 km long and crosses the Thames-Coromandel, Hauraki and Matamata-Piako districts. Its 34 km section from Thames to Paeroa passes through lush farmland. Check current route and usage information if you plan to ride the trail.

The Thames-Coromandel District also has historical and cultural landmarks, including in Thames. The Thames School of Mines complex is nationally significant as a rare and well-preserved example of its kind. The site has spiritual, cultural and archaeological significance and is of particular importance to Ngati Maru. For more than a century, the Band Rotunda in Victoria Park in Thames has been used for musical performances and related events. The Thames Pillar Boxes are located in central Thames, an important historic settlement and visitor centre on the Coromandel Peninsula. Much of the surrounding area is designated as the Grahamstown Historic Heritage Area in the proposed District Plan.
