Hot Water Beach – Tidal Pools and Hotels
Accommodation in Hot Water Beach
At Hot Water Beach, natural hot pools lie right on the beach; access to them depends on the low tide. The landscape includes views of the Pacific Ocean and offshore Castle Rock. Cliffs lined with pōhutukawa trees stand at both ends of the beach.
Hot Pools and Low Tide
The natural pools are available year-round. Their water is heated geothermally. Visitors can dig their own spa pool in the sand; however, the hot springs are accessible only at low tide. Around two hours on either side of low tide usually provides an opportunity to create your own pool. This time frame is approximate, so check the tide table for your planned visit date. The tides wash away the pools that have been dug. Tide levels therefore determine both access and the time available to create a bathing pool yourself.
Cultural Context and Swimming
The natural pools are near a urupā and a pā. Ngāti Hei and the local community protect this taonga. The pools are therefore part of an environment with a cultural context as well as a geothermal feature.
Hot Water Beach has strong ocean currents and rip currents. If you swim, stay between the Surf Lifeguard Service flags. Patrol availability and sea conditions vary.
Art and Surfing
Moko Artspace showcases works by well over 100 artists. The participating artists may change. This offers a different way to experience the local area than the pools on the beach.
For surf lessons, Te Puia Surf Co offers private instruction for individuals or groups. Lessons include shortboard and longboard surfing. Check before your trip whether lessons are still available.
Spade Hire and Parking
You can hire spades for digging at Hotties Cafe, Hot Water Beach Cafe and Hot Water Beach Top 10 Holiday Park. Since availability may vary, it’s best to check on spade hire before your visit.
Parking is available at Main Beach carpark, Te Waiwai carpark and Main Store carpark. Fees may apply at Main Store carpark. Parking rules and fees may change; check the latest information before you arrive.
