Orari brings together several distinct themes: the history of a community hall, early racing events in South Canterbury, and a mini golf experience with a rural regional theme. When choosing a destination for your hotel stay, you can weigh these highlights according to your interests—from local remembrance and architecture to a family-friendly leisure activity.

Coronation Hall: remembrance and architecture

Orari Coronation Hall is located at 8 MacDonald Street in Orari. The hall houses the First and Second World War rolls of honour; the First World War roll was installed in 1916. Through its connection with Orari’s civic life, the hall has historical and social significance.

The hall is also architecturally significant: it is the work of Samuel Hurst Seager (1855–1933), one of New Zealand’s leading architects in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The building can therefore be viewed both in terms of its importance to Orari’s civic life and in the context of the architectural history of its time. Its connection to the architect adds a built-environment perspective to the hall’s social role.

Racing history: two historic milestones

The first documented race meeting in South Canterbury took place on 1 April 1859 at Orari Run. A later, distinct milestone is 1881: that year, the Geraldine Trotting Club began holding its events at a racecourse that opened in Orari in the same year. The two accounts distinguish an early race at Orari Run from the start of the club’s events at the racecourse.

Orari Racecourse is a racecourse dating from the late Victorian period. Several older buildings associated with the historic Geraldine Trotting Club stand there: a grandstand, a clubroom, a hall, betting booths and an entrance booth. Orari’s racing history can therefore be explored not only through dates but also through the racecourse’s various buildings.

Orari Mini Golf with a regional theme

Orari Mini Golf complements the historical themes with a family-friendly mini golf experience. It focuses on South Canterbury and the region’s rural history. If you would also like to consider a leisure activity connected with regional history when choosing your destination, this theme offers a different focus from the hall’s rolls of honour or the history of the racecourse.
