Get to know Geraldine through its nature, trails and culture. There are many ways to explore, including walking trails in the forest and along the river, cycling routes through wooded reserves and gorges, and museums covering topics from local history to technology. There is also the seasonal Farmers Market and a visitor experience centred around the Barker’s product range. You can tailor your stay to whether you’d rather spend time outdoors, visit collections, or discover the market and its products.

Talbot Forest: Forest and Geology

Talbot Forest lies on the outskirts of Geraldine and is a remnant of an old podocarp and hardwood forest. It is a five-minute walk from the centre of Geraldine. Talbot Reserve protects 28 hectares of mixed forest containing podocarp and hardwood species. The Talbot Forest Scenic Reserve is situated on a 2.5-million-year-old basalt lava flow. The forest can therefore be understood both through its tree species and its geological foundations.

Several short walking trails wind through Talbot Forest, with scenic picnic areas connecting them. The short forest trails and picnic areas offer a great setting for spending time outdoors. If you’d prefer a waterside walk to a forest stroll, the Waihi River Walk follows the banks of the Waihi River through the town centre. The tree-lined path is quite different in its location and surroundings from the walking trails in Talbot Forest.

Walking and Cycling

Bike Geraldine offers a network of shared cycling trails through the wooded reserves and gorges of Geraldine. This gives you several ways to get around: a riverside walking trail in the centre, several short forest trails, and cycling routes through reserves and gorges. Which one you choose depends on whether you’d like to explore Geraldine on foot by the water, along forest trails, or by bike.

For information about walking and cycling trails in Geraldine and the surrounding areas, the Geraldine Visitor Information Centre provides extensive information as well as free brochures and maps. This lets you find trail information and practical travel-planning resources in one place.

Museums with a Range of Focuses

The Geraldine Historical Museum is housed in the town’s original Town Board Office. The building was constructed in 1885 and is listed as a Category 2 historic building. The museum shares local stories through engaging exhibits, life-size photographs and audiovisual presentations. Here, local history is brought to life both through the historic building and the different forms of exhibition.

At the Geraldine Military Museum, you can see, experience and learn about military history. The Geraldine Vintage Machinery & Car Museum displays veteran, vintage and classic cars, tractors and machinery. Its collection is spread across eight purpose-built buildings. The museums cover different subjects: local stories and a historic building, military history, and vehicles and machinery.

Farmers Market and Barker’s

The Geraldine Farmers Market is held every year from September to April on Saturday mornings. Its seasonal opening period and Saturday-morning schedule are important details for planning your trip; check the exact dates before you travel. Barker’s Foodstore & Eatery offers a different kind of visitor experience: you can learn how Barker’s products are used, try them and buy the full range. The market follows a recurring seasonal schedule, while Barker’s combines learning about, sampling and shopping for its products.

With forest trails, a riverside walk in the centre, cycling routes, museums and seasonal offerings, Geraldine offers several different themes to shape your trip around.
