On the Kaikōura Peninsula, the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway follows the cliffs to South Bay, then returns to town via South Bay and Toms Track. Allow at least three hours for the full walk. This lets you plan the peninsula route as a standalone activity.

Coast and wildlife

Seals are likely to be found around the car park at Point Kean. You can therefore plan for a possible sighting, but not a guaranteed one. Bird City is the largest red-billed gull colony on the South Island. Beside this section of the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway, a new Hutton’s shearwater colony is located on the sea cliffs behind a large predator-proof fence. These places show different aspects of the district’s wildlife: possible seal sightings, the red-billed gull colony and the protected shearwater colony.

Coastal walks and activities

The Link Pathway connects West End and Point Kean on a scenic route for walking and cycling. The path offers panoramic views of the coast and mountains. When choosing a route, you can weigh up the attractions mentioned: the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway follows the cliffs to South Bay and back to town; the Link Pathway connects West End with Point Kean and is also suitable for cycling.

Just beyond the tidal platforms on the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway is an area for diving and snorkelling. Kaikōura Kayaks offers guided kayaking trips to observe seals, dolphins and whales, and is licensed by DOC to do so. Tours and permits can change; check both for your preferred date. Whale Watch Kaikōura uses purpose-built boats for observing and photographing marine wildlife. As tour conditions can vary, it is advisable to check suitable dates before planning.

History and cultural character

The Kaikōura Museum presents Kaikōura’s natural, social and cultural development. Its permanent exhibition highlights the district’s special connection with the sea. Fyffe House is a preserved testament to New Zealand’s early whaling industry. These offer different ways to explore the area: a broad look at Kaikōura’s development and the tangible legacy of early whaling.
