Selwyn District: Landscapes, Culture and Experiences
Accommodation in Selwyn District
If youâre planning a hotel stay in Selwyn District, your interests can help determine where to go: geology and landscapes, cultural heritage, a cave, active experiences, regional produce or an evening of stargazing each offer a different focus. To help you choose, first decide what kind of stay you want: would you like to see geological formations, explore a particular cultural theme or plan a specific activity?
Landscapes between gorge and limestone
The Rakaia Gorge Walking Track runs along the edge of the gorge through striking geological areas featuring lava flows of rhyolite, pitchstone and andesite. Access is on the Selwyn side of the river. Kura TÄwhiti/Castle Hill presents a different geological landscape: the area features striking limestone formations and is of particular importance to NgÄi Tahu. Kura TÄwhiti is also regarded internationally as a world-class destination for climbing and bouldering. These offer distinct focuses: the gorge landscape and its lava flows, or the limestone formations, which are also associated with climbing and bouldering.
A cave to walk through
Cave Stream is a 594-metre-long cave in Cave Stream Scenic Reserve. Two short tracks lead to the entrances, and you can walk through the cave from one entrance to the other. This makes Cave Stream a different kind of activity from the track along the edge of Rakaia Gorge: here, the experience takes you through a cave passage rather than along the edge of a gorge. Cave conditions require care. Plan Cave Stream as a nature experience in its own right, and take the conditions into account when visiting.
Cultural heritage and regional produce
St Paulâs Anglican Church and the old Tai Tapu Library were both completed in 1932. Their construction was largely funded by Sir Heaton Rhodes, who lived at nearby Otahuna. Their shared completion date and funding give the two buildings a historical connection. They offer a specific point of interest for travellers who want to include architectural and local history in their plans, alongside landscapes and activities.
The Lincoln Farmerâs & Craft Market adds regional produce and crafts to this selection. It offers produce sourced entirely from the region and handmade crafts. The market takes place year-round; its schedule may change, so check the latest dates before visiting. The focus here is on local products and craftsmanshipâa different emphasis from a single geological site or building.
Boat experiences and Open Nights
Alpine Jet Thrills offers JetBoat and AirBoat experiences from Springfield. If a boat experience suits your stay, keep in mind that operators and operating arrangements can change. Check the latest information before making firm plans for the trip.
At the Canterbury Astronomical Society Open Nights at the RF Joyce Observatory in West Melton, the evening includes a guided tour of the night sky and telescope viewing. It begins with a welcome talk at 7:30 pm and runs until 9 pm. The Open Nights are seasonal and weather-dependent; check the dates before travelling. This means the evening event needs to be planned differently from a visit for which no set schedule is specified.
