The Motu Trails run from the coast near Ōpōtiki to Matawai, passing through varied landscapes, natural areas and historic surroundings. They are among the Great Rides of the New Zealand Cycle Trail. When planning a trip, it makes sense to distinguish this outdoor theme from the buildings in Ōpōtiki and the walking destinations in the surrounding area: cycle trails, loop walks and local architectural history offer different perspectives on Opotiki District.

Motu Trails and Tour Planning

The Dunes Trail is one of the Motu Trails. Options include easy cycle rides or walks, as well as more challenging mountain biking and trail running experiences, and multi-day bikepacking trips between Ōpōtiki and Tairāwhiti/Gisborne. The differences are in both the activity and the timeframe: multi-day bikepacking requires different planning from a walk or an easy cycle ride. Motu Trails operators offer shuttle services with drop-offs at Matawai, Motu or on the ridge above Motu for rides to the coast near Ōpōtiki. Shuttle availability and minimum group sizes may vary. Check these details, along with trail conditions and access rules, before setting out.

Walking Tracks in the Surrounding Area

Near Ōpōtiki, the Marawaiwai Track is an easy 20- to 30-minute loop through kahikatea forest. The track includes two bridged stream crossings. Marawaiwai Scenic Reserve is 7 km southeast of Ōpōtiki. The stated duration offers a clear comparison with multi-day bikepacking: here, a short loop contrasts with a tour spanning several days. Weather and track conditions may affect access; take this into account when planning.

The Tauranga Loop Track is 26 km southeast of Ōpōtiki on SH2, in the surrounding area. The track crosses the historic Tauranga Bridge and follows Tauranga Stream. There are parking and picnic facilities at the start. Before visiting, check stream conditions and the state of the facilities.

Historic Buildings in Ōpōtiki and the Waioeka Valley

The Opotiki Hotel is a notable example of hotel architecture in Ōpōtiki. It was built in 1904 to replace an earlier hotel that had been destroyed by fire. The former Shalfoon Brothers Shop Buildings represent a different type of historic building: they are an unusually well-preserved example of an early 20th-century retail and commercial complex. Together, the two examples show different uses within the town’s architectural history.

Agassiz House is considered one of the oldest surviving rural villas in the Waioeka Valley. Its original core is an F-plan villa dating from around the turn of the century. Alongside this architectural classification, the house is linked in the collective memory to an event in Opotiki District: the killing of missionary Carl Sylvius Volkner (1819–1865) by Pai-Mārire emissary Kereopa Te Rau in 1865. The villa’s architecture and this historical memory are two distinct aspects of the District’s history.
