Lakes and geothermal landscapes shape Bay of Plenty. The region also has remnants of gold mining and timber harvesting that may interest visitors. This gives the region a range of themes to consider when planning a trip: nature, historical traces and buildings, and trails through the landscape. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can first consider which of these aspects of the region matter most for your trip.

Buildings and regional history

In Tauranga, you’ll find the wooden library and mission house at The Elms. They are considered the oldest known surviving buildings in Bay of Plenty. Their age is not the only reason they are significant: the mission house and library are nationally significant because they reflect the early contact between the Church Missionary Society and Māori in the region.

The Elms thus brings architectural history together with an important historical relationship. The library and mission house give the site a tangible architectural dimension; their national significance also points to the early contact in the region. For visitors interested in history, this connection offers a distinct way to experience Bay of Plenty, alongside its landscapes and traces of gold mining and timber harvesting.

Trails with different landmarks

The Leyland O'Brien Tramline Track follows an old tramway route along the headwaters of the Ngamuwahine River. Its historic alignment and riverside course provide two specific points of reference. It also connects Whakamarama Road with the North–South Track and is located in Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park in Bay of Plenty. Check current conditions with the Department of Conservation before your trip.

For the Tarawera Trail, the starting point and facilities along the way are important landmarks: the trail begins at the Te Wairoa car park on Tarawera Road. At Hawaiki Bay, it offers access to the lake as well as a picnic area with toilets. The two trails therefore differ in the features described: the Leyland O'Brien Tramline Track focuses on the old route and its connection to another track, while the Tarawera Trail offers lake access and a picnic area.

Rotorua and the spa buildings

The Rotorua Government Gardens continue to offer relaxation at a therapeutic spa in historic spa buildings. This combines a current use with the buildings’ historical setting. If you include this place in your plans, confirm the current facilities before your trip.

Which hotel location best suits your plans depends on which of these themes you want to focus on.
