Discover Wayasewa Island
Accommodation in Wayasewa Island
Wayasewa Island, also called Waya Lailai, lies at the southern tip of the Yasawa Islands. Wayalailai Ecohaven Resort has a community-led origin story. Hikes, the sandbank connection to Waya, and the island’s highest mountain add specific routes and landscape features to the accommodation options described here. This helps distinguish the homestay offerings from older descriptions of other hikes.
Accommodation with Village Life and Activities
Ruci and Mali's Homestay is located on the beach on Wayasewa Island, in the village of Namara. There, guests are welcomed into village life and local traditions. Offerings include a traditional kava ceremony and cultural activities such as weaving and cooking classes.
The homestay also offers the guided Top of the Rock Hike. The hike provides scenic views and is available at sunrise or sunset. These two times of day give you a specific point of reference for planning. Unlike the cultural activities, the focus here is on hiking with a view; the kava ceremony, weaving, and cooking classes, in contrast, highlight local traditions.
Trails Across the Island and to the Sandbank
A trail of about three hours crosses Wayasewa Island to the village of Naboro on the north coast. The duration is approximate and can serve as a guide when planning your time. Ask about the current trail conditions before setting out. This means the island trail is described in terms of time differently from the sandbank connection between Wayasewa Island and Waya Island.
The sandbank can be crossed on foot toward the crescent-shaped Yalobi Bay. Check the tides locally before planning this crossing. The two routes offer different navigational details: the island trail is described by its approximate duration and destination, Naboro, while the sandbank provides a connection to Waya and a route toward Yalobi Bay.
Landscape and Community History
Vatuvula Peak is the highest mountain on Wayasewa Island and a volcanic plug. This geological term refers to solidified magma in a volcanic vent. A 2007 travel report described a guided hike to the summit. If you are planning this particular hike, check locally whether it is currently offered. This older summit hike is distinct from the Top of the Rock Hike offered at Ruci and Mali's Homestay, with scenic views and sunrise or sunset options. A protected area was also established at Wayalailai Ecohaven.
Wayalailai Ecohaven Resort is located next to Namara on Wayasewa Island. The villages of Namara, Naboro, and Yamata initiated the resort and funded its construction through contributions from each family and volunteer labor. A case study published in 2015 described the resort at that time as fully owned and operated by the Indigenous Fijian community. It also notes that the old school building was converted into dormitories and a dining hall. This origin story highlights the collaboration of the three villages, families, and volunteers—a different aspect from the activities explicitly offered at the homestay in Namara.
