Sigatoka lies on the banks of the Sigatoka River and takes its name from the river. Sigatoka Town is considered the main commercial centre of the Coral Coast. For trip planning, the town brings together river history and traces of its early settlement with markets, cultural events and attractions in the surrounding area. When comparing hotels in Sigatoka, these different highlights can help you decide what you want your stay to focus on.

River History and Preserved Traces

A notable chapter in the town’s history is the former railway bridge over the Sigatoka River. The 810-foot-long wooden bridge opened in 1913 and was decked with wooden planks. It connected the sugarcane-growing area on the east bank with the community on the west bank. As a visible heritage landmark, it recalls this connection; at the same time, it is in a state beyond repair.

The early settlement history can also be seen elsewhere: when crossing Melrose Bridge, some of the original buildings are still visible. The historic Sigatoka River Jetty has also been preserved. Together, these landmarks point to different aspects of the town—the connection between the riverbanks, the early buildings and the former jetty.

Markets and Agricultural Heritage

Sigatoka is often called the “Salad Bowl of Fiji.” The town is a major supplier of fruit and vegetables to most hotels on the Coral Coast and all major urban markets in Fiji. This agricultural heritage is also reflected in the region’s markets: a description from 2021 refers to the Saturday Market as a Saturday market where several farmers sell produce and goods from across the Sigatoka River Valley. If you want to plan your visit around the market, check the current market day in advance.

The Municipal Market offers the opportunity to experience local Fijian traditions. The Saturday Market and the Municipal Market offer different points of interest: the former is notable for goods sourced from the Sigatoka River Valley, while the latter is a place to experience local traditions.

Cultural Events and Annual Planning

The Sigatoka Riverbank Amphitheatre was inaugurated on 26 April 2024. It provides a venue for live performances and cultural exchange. If you want to attend a particular performance, check the event dates in advance.
