Tuxpan De Rodríguez Cano – River, Cuisine and Culture
Accommodation in Tuxpan De Rodríguez Cano
Túxpam de Rodríguez Cano combines an urban center on the Río Tuxpan with regional cuisine and cultural sites. If you are looking for a hotel, first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like to explore the historic center and the riverfront promenade, or also include natural attractions elsewhere in the municipality? The sites are spread across different areas of the city and municipality.
The city center: square, cathedral, and river
Parque Reforma is the main square and the social center of the historic center. Opposite it is the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the main Catholic church in Túxpam de Rodríguez Cano and the seat of the local diocese. The square, cathedral, and proximity to the river give the center distinct cultural and urban points of reference.
The Río Tuxpan shapes the city and extends for 11 kilometers to its mouth at the Gulf. The Malecón de Tuxpan runs along the river: a social and recreational waterfront promenade that reaches close to the mouth. The 11 kilometers refers to the river; the promenade follows its banks only to a point near the mouth.
Cuisine and cultural sites
Tuxpan’s cuisine combines the corn traditions of the Huasteca Veracruzanas with fresh products from the sea and river. Specialties include masa-based dishes, fresh seafood, and local desserts. This blend of corn traditions and products from the coast and river gives the regional cuisine its distinctive character.
Another cultural feature is the mural in the Palacio Municipal. Professor David Celestino created it in 1999; its symbols relate to the identity of Tuxpan and its surroundings. In the municipality, in Santiago de la Peña on the Río Tuxpan near the main bridge, is the Museo de la Hermandad México-Cuba. It is also known as the Museo de la Amistad México-Cuba and is one of Tuxpan’s most significant historical sites.
Riverside spots and nature in the municipality
Within the city, Parque Ribereño offers outdoor recreation by the Río Tuxpan. Its features include green spaces, quiet areas, and direct access to the riverbank. The Santuario de las Iguanas is also located on the banks of the Río Tuxpan, between Parque Niños Héroes and the Unidad Deportiva. Green iguanas and black garrobos live there.
Laguna de Tampamachoco, a coastal lagoon with mangroves and various aquatic animals, lies in the municipality of Tuxpan. It is about 9 to 10 kilometers north of the municipal seat. The mangroves of Tuxpan are part of Ramsar Site 1602, “Manglares y Humedales de Tuxpan,” an almost 7,000-hectare coastal ecosystem in northern Veracruz.
The Tuxpan reefs also lie off the municipality’s coast. They are part of the Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Sistema Arrecifal Lobos-Tuxpan; the coral chain is considered the northernmost in the Gulf of Mexico and forms an ecologically significant marine ecosystem. The Área de Conservación San Basilio is a privately and communally managed nature reserve in the Ejido La Ceiba, about 15 minutes from the city center.
The Huerto del Bambú ecotourism camp in the municipality of Tuxpan offers kayaking and canoeing, a temazcal, a camping area, and a bamboo terrace overlooking the river. Before your trip, check which activities are currently available on your dates.
