Discover Antón Lizardo
Accommodation in Antón Lizardo
Antón Lizardo combines coastal recreation in town with historical sites and a focus on excursions at sea. If you’re looking for hotels in Antón Lizardo, first decide whether your trip will focus mainly on staying in town or also include a visit to the Parque Nacional Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano. The park is offshore from Antón Lizardo, not within the town—a key distinction when planning your stay and a boat trip.
Coast and Reef Area
On weekends, residents of nearby towns come to Antón Lizardo to enjoy the sun, sea breeze, and water. Local specialties and stews are also part of the weekend offerings. If you plan your trip for a weekend, you can include time on the coast and local cuisine as two separate interests in your plans.
The Parque Nacional Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano is the largest coral reef system in the Gulf of Mexico. Isla de Enmedio and Cancuncito are public-use zones within the park.
From Antón Lizardo, a boat trip takes you to Isla de Enmedio. There, visitors can snorkel and observe the flora and fauna. Isla de Enmedio has white-sand beaches and clear, turquoise water. This gives your excursion a distinct island focus: a boat trip, snorkeling, and nature observation differ from coastal recreation on land.
Access to the Parque Nacional Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano is permitted only on authorized tourist boats. Visitors must arrange their trip through authorized tourist operators in Veracruz, Boca del Río, or Antón Lizardo. Check for current operators and operating conditions before your trip.
May through August is recommended for visiting the park. The park has at least 50 buoys for diving; the number may change. The buoy information applies to diving in the park, while snorkeling is possible at Isla de Enmedio.
The timeframes refer to different things: weekends are associated with coastal recreation in town, while May through August is the recommended time to visit the park. If you’d like to combine both in one trip, plan these timeframes separately and confirm the park recommendation with the park administration.
History and Directions
The town’s historical sites include the archaeological remains of the former military installation Batería de Antón Lizardo, which is listed in the Catálogo Nacional de Monumentos Históricos. Another historical reference is the Escuela Naval Militar, which was officially established in Antón Lizardo on January 1, 1953. The Batería represents the archaeological remains of a former installation, while the naval academy marks a specific, dated event in the town’s history.
Antón Lizardo lies at the end of the road leading from the Port of Veracruz toward Córdoba and Orizaba. The access road branches off to the left immediately after crossing the bridge from Boca del Río.
