Estación Catorce
Accommodation in Estación Catorce
The historic Estación Catorce railway station is classified as a Historic Monument. Railway history, the Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, and cultural ties to the wider destination of Catorce give the town a range of points of interest.
The Railway Station and Its History
The station was built on the México–Laredo main line of the Ferrocarril Nacional Mexicano. In May 1888, the Ferrocarril Nacional construction locomotive reached what would later become Estación de Catorce. In November of that year, rail service between Mexico and Laredo de Tamaulipas began on the line. The arrival of the construction locomotive and the start of service mark distinct stages in the railway’s history.
Church, Museum, and Traditions
The Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús is located at Calle Iturbide No. 6, in the center of Estación Catorce, 78543, Catorce, San Luis Potosí. If you plan to attend a service, check the current schedule, as times may change.
The Museo de Estación Catorce was inaugurated. The museum aims to preserve the railway and cultural history of the municipality. At its inauguration, an exhibition of historical photographs showed women who worked at railway stations: some carried heavy loads, while others operated the train.
A local publication from August 2006 describes a Rosa de Plata tradition held on the last weekend of June. People from Estación Catorce and Monterrey carried the rose on foot in alternating stages and presented it to the Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. If you would like to experience this tradition, check the current event dates.
Wirikuta, Routes, and Landscape
Estación Catorce is a starting point for journeys toward Wirikuta, the sacred land of the Huichol people. A route description from August 2006 lists the sequence Estación Catorce, Carretas, Los Catorce, and finally Real de Catorce. If you follow this historical description, check road conditions and available transportation options before traveling.
A historical local description of the route mentions waterfalls, small streams, and a river that flows only after rain. In addition, a municipal tourism listing from the 2018–2021 period identifies Estación Catorce as a destination for Willys tours. If such a ride is part of your plans, confirm in advance whether it is currently available.
The Wider Catorce Area
Within the wider destination of Catorce, Real de Catorce is a distinct historical landmark. The former mining settlement in the Altiplano region was founded around 1778. On November 29, 2012, Real de Catorce was declared a Historic Monuments Zone; it includes 123 monuments from the 18th and 19th centuries. One example of local architectural history is the Antigua Casa de Moneda: Santos de la Maza began building it in 1863, it opened in 1865, and it closed a year later.
The Túnel de Ogarrio is another feature of Real de Catorce: the tunnel runs through solid rock, is 2.3 kilometers long, and leads to Real de Catorce. These details add a specific point of reference to the tunnel to the historical picture of Catorce, without treating Estación Catorce and Real de Catorce as the same destination.
