Catorce: Mining History and Pilgrimage Tradition
Accommodation in Catorce
Real de Catorce is a former mining settlement in the Altiplano, founded around 1778. The town lies in the Sierra de Catorce in the state of San Luis Potosí, at an altitude of 2,750 meters. The Túnel de Ogarrio passes through solid rock to Real de Catorce; the tunnel is 2.3 kilometers long. Visitors can get around on foot in town, and several tourist attractions are close together.
Pilgrimage Tradition and Wirikuta
The temple is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and houses an image of Saint Francis of Assisi. Every year on October 4, hundreds of pilgrims venerate the image. This fixed date gives the pilgrimage tradition a specific time reference: if you would like to include this in your travel plans, you can keep October 4 in mind.
The municipality of Catorce is also part of a broader cultural context. The traditional Wixárika pilgrimage route crosses the municipality in the area that the Wixárika people call Wirikuta. The state-protected area bears the official name Área Natural Protegida Sitio Sagrado Natural de „Wirikuta y la Ruta Histórico Cultural del Pueblo Wixárika“ and also includes the municipality of Catorce. Thus, the pilgrimage tradition in Real de Catorce and the municipality’s broader connections exist side by side, without meaning the same thing.
Mining Heritage and Local History
The Casa de Moneda was in operation from 1865 to 1866. The Antigua Casa de Moneda was commissioned by Santos de la Maza from 1863; it opened in 1865 and closed a year later.
Real de Catorce was declared a historic monuments zone on November 29, 2012. It comprises 123 historic monuments from the 18th and 19th centuries. Stone seating in the Palenque de Gallos is reminiscent of Greek theaters; the remains of the Plaza de Toros can also be seen. The former Plaza del Comercio was converted into a garden in 1885 and received wrought-iron arches as arcades in 1888. Another detail that can be dated is the inscription on a bell: “Guadalupe, febrero 16 de 1892.”
On Foot and in the Surrounding Area
A visit to Pueblo Fantasma includes a walk of about an hour, with views of the hills and a panoramic view of the town. The approximate duration is a helpful guide for planning your day. Pueblo Fantasma consists of the ruins of former processing haciendas belonging to the Minas de Concepción and the Compromiso shaft.
There are other ways to explore the surrounding area: in Real de Catorce, you can rent Willys vehicles, off-road precursors to the Jeep. They can be used to explore rough tracks and paths, as well as the surrounding semi-desert plains and mountain ranges. You can also explore the area on horseback. Availability for both activities may vary by operator. A state tourism notice dated June 21, 2026, also lists certified tour guides in Real de Catorce with valid credentials in accordance with NOM-09-TUR. If you are planning a guided tour, check that the credentials are currently valid.
