Punta Allen, also locally known as Javier Rojo GĂłmez, is a fishing village in the heart of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. Fishing and nature experiences shape the character of the place. Tourism is supported mainly by local cooperatives. Their members are former fishermen who use their boats and expertise to offer nature experiences. This means that local fishing is also part of the visitor experience today.

Nature and Water Experiences

Boat trips are among the tourist activities in Punta Allen. Other options include snorkeling on reefs, sport fishing—including fly fishing—and excursions through mangroves and lagoons. Each activity has a different focus: snorkeling centers on the reefs, while sport fishing focuses on fishing. Boat trips and tours through mangroves and lagoons offer further ways to experience nature.

Dolphin, sea turtle, and bird watching are also available. Sightings naturally vary, so plan for them as a possibility rather than a guarantee. To choose between activities, consider which interests you most: wildlife watching, reefs, or sport fishing. Conditions and availability for snorkeling may vary, so check the current options before making plans.

Fishing and Local Character

The Vigía Chico cooperative in Punta Allen is described as a sustainable artisanal fishery that coexists with marine conservation. For more than 30 years, it was the largest producer of spiny lobster Panulirus argus in the state of Quintana Roo and was cited as an example of sustainable artisanal fishing. This history gives fishing a tangible place in the community: it is part of the fishing village’s identity and is also connected to today’s nature tourism.

The small range of dining options for visitors also relies on local fishing and fresh seafood. Fishing is therefore not only part of the cooperative’s history, but also shapes the culinary side of the community.

Sian Ka'an and the Surrounding Area

The biosphere reserve features a varied landscape that includes tropical forests, palm trees, savannas, extensive mangrove areas, sandy beaches, and dunes. These landscapes describe the wider protected area. Its marine area covers more than 120,000 hectares and protects a valuable part of the Mesoamerican Reef System, as well as seagrass beds in shallow bays.

The protected area also includes cenotes, natural water-filled pools, and petenes: forest islands rising from wetlands. Underground freshwater systems connect these two types of landscape. Sian Ka'an is also home to jaguars, pumas, ocelots, Central American tapirs, resident and migratory bird species, manatees, sea turtles, and numerous fish species. This biodiversity adds the protected area’s wider natural environment to the specific activities available in Punta Allen.

Getting There and Accommodation

Access to Punta Allen is via the Arco Maya checkpoint, followed by 50 kilometers of unpaved road. Road conditions can vary, so check them before you set out.

Punta Allen has a small selection of rustic accommodations. Availability may change, so it’s a good idea to check before booking. In addition to the nature experiences, two practical considerations can help you decide: the long unpaved access road and the limited choice of accommodations.
