Quintana Roo offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: Maya architecture, protected areas, reefs and regional cuisine. If you’re looking for a hotel in Quintana Roo, you can start by thinking about which of these themes matter most to your trip. The region’s destinations differ in their surviving structures, landscapes and activities.

Maya History and Architecture

Cobá was an important ancient Maya city between lakes and surrounded by five lagoons. Its 50 raised Sacbé roads led to ceremonial, administrative and residential complexes. The roads are a distinctive feature of the city and offer insight into how its different complexes were connected. On Cozumel, San Gervasio was the most important Maya city. Its excavated residential and sacred complexes, shrines and pyramids attest to the site’s historical significance.

The Manitas building is part of San Gervasio: impressions of human hands are preserved on its interior walls. The building was constructed in the Costa Oriental style during the Late Postclassic period (1250–1550). In pre-Hispanic times, Xcaret was a port of embarkation for pilgrims traveling to Cozumel and an important Maya trading city. Cenotes, rejoyadas and caves there were associated with water collection, cultivation and ritual use.

Kohunlich was continuously inhabited during the pre-Hispanic era, approximately from 500 BCE to 1100 CE. The archaeological site is surrounded by jungle. In the Temple of the Masks, figures retain traces of red paint and depict real people with solar attributes. Dzibanché consists of four architectural groups: Dzibanché, or the Main Group; the Central Complex, or Lamay Group; Tutil; and Kinichná. At Muyil, the history and architecture of a coastal town come together: its architecture is associated with the Petén tradition and includes temples with intricately worked edges. Chacchobén is considered the most important Maya city in the lake zone of present-day Quintana Roo. At the El Meco archaeological zone, the summit of El Castillo, the tallest building, offers an outstanding view of Cancún and its surroundings. As visiting conditions may change, check them before planning a specific visit.

Protected Areas, Reefs and Landscapes

Sian Ka'an is one of Mexico’s largest protected areas and is located in the state of Quintana Roo. The area covers 528,148 hectares of interconnected marine, coastal and terrestrial ecosystems. Its reefs are suitable for scuba diving and underwater photography. In addition to its archaeological attractions, the region offers a distinct perspective through its marine environments and underwater landscapes.

Isla Contoy National Park preserves largely intact Caribbean island ecosystems and provides refuge for various seabirds. The Arrecife de Puerto Morelos protected area is home to colonies of elkhorn coral, among the best-preserved in the Mexican Caribbean. Sian Ka'an, Isla Contoy and Arrecife de Puerto Morelos each represent different aspects of Quintana Roo’s natural environment: interconnected habitats, island ecosystems with seabirds and protected coral colonies.

Regional Cuisine as Another Way to Explore

Published on August 28, 2026, the travel guide “Bocados de Mar y Tierra” takes readers through twelve destinations in the state. It presents the dishes, ingredients and traditional knowledge that shape Quintana Roo’s traditional and contemporary cuisine. The offerings featured in the guide may continue to evolve.
