Discover El Marqués
Accommodation in El Marqués
The historical and cultural themes of El Marqués come to life through specific places in La Cañada. Church architecture, Cantera craftsmanship, religious festivals and leisure opportunities at Cerro de la Cruz or Presa del Diablo offer different highlights.
Culture and Architectural History
Iglesia Chiquita in La Cañada was built in 1529 and is considered the first Catholic temple built in Querétaro. Three round-arched structures are part of its architecture; according to the description, each is interpreted as a symbol of humanity’s European search for God. The building thus brings together an early date and religious imagery.
A large, movable baptismal font made of pink Cantera is also located in Iglesia Chiquita. According to some accounts, the Otomí leader Conín was baptized in it. Casa de la Cultura adds to the theme of architectural history: Francisco Amaya Avendaño began construction of the building in 1873. Workshops in handicrafts, dance and music are held there. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular workshop, check in advance to see what is currently on offer.
Cantera, Art and Local Specialties
In the town center of La Cañada, urban art adorns some façades along streets paved with Cantera; individual artworks may change over time. Cantera also plays a role in local crafts, with several workshops working the stone. Their principal works include religious depictions and household decorations, such as fountains, façades and columns. The façade art in the town center and the work of the workshops show different aspects of design using Cantera.
At the foot of Calle Venustiano Carranza, you can enjoy the nieves made there. This adds a culinary dimension to architecture and craftsmanship, tied to a specific place in La Cañada.
Annual Festivals
The traditional Fiesta de El Gallo takes place every year on December 8 in honor of the Virgen de la Concepción de Hércules. The venue is Plaza de San Pedro, where a nighttime address is given. Another annual celebration honors Señor San Pedro: on June 29, the patron saint is celebrated in his temple. During Holy Week, the Crucifixion is reenacted each year at Cerro de la Cruz. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these celebrations, check the dates for the relevant year.
Leisure and Landscape
Cerro de la Cruz has a natural climbing wall and a bouldering area. If you are considering climbing as well as culture when choosing your destination, these features offer a distinct focus alongside religious buildings and festivals.
Presa del Diablo was built in 1592 as a hydraulic reservoir to control the flow of water. The dam is also a good place for a family picnic. The site thus combines a historical function with another idea for enjoying your stay.
