Cadereyta de Montes combines a botanical focus with a historic center, other cultural sites and regional cuisine. When planning your stay, you can consider these topics separately: plant collections and greenhouses sit alongside local and architectural history, astronomy offerings and dishes associated with Cadereyta. This lets you choose your focus based on which aspects of the destination interest you.

Botany and Plant Studies

The Jardín Botánico Regional de Cadereyta brings together five formal collections: the semidesert, the cacti of Querétaro, the vegetation of the Querétaro Valley, the genus Mammillaria in Mexico and the agaves of Querétaro. The range extends from plant populations named after regional areas to a collection focused on Mammillaria. Those interested in botany will find several distinct thematic approaches in one place.

The garden is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; guided tours start every hour from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Check opening and tour times before your trip.

The Quinta Fernando Schmoll greenhouses are in Barrio de las Fuentes, directly opposite the Pilancón. They were founded in 1920 by the painter Ferdinand Schmoll and the biologist Carolina Wagner. The Quinta is dedicated to the conservation, study and propagation of flora, as well as to research into and the dissemination of knowledge about cacti and succulents. While the Jardín’s collections are organized by landscape and plant group, the Quinta focuses on conservation and sharing knowledge.

Historic Sites and Culture

Cadereyta’s historic center was founded in 1640 and can be explored on foot or by tram. Examples there include the Parroquia de San Pedro y San Pablo, as well as the Capilla de El Refugio and the Capilla de San Gaspar. The Parroquia has a Baroque altarpiece that adds a distinctive architectural accent. If the tram is relevant to your plans, check its current service in advance.

Hacienda Tovares was built in 1640 by Captain Alonso de Tovar y Guzmán. It was the site of the civil event that led to the founding of the present-day city of Cadereyta de Montes. The hacienda thus connects a specific building with the city’s founding history.

Toluquilla is also in the municipality of Cadereyta de Montes, south of the Sierra Gorda. The settlement existed from 400 BCE until shortly before the conquest. Ore extractors and miners, whose work was influenced by various cultures, left impressive structures there. This long archaeological period differs markedly from the founding of the historic center in 1640.

Regional Cuisine

The main square has various restaurants, cafés and snack bars. Some have terraces or viewpoints overlooking the sunsets. La Quinta Wagner specializes in regional Querétaro and Mexican cuisine and serves Nopal en penca, considered a typical dish of Cadereyta. Check the current menu if you specifically want to try this dish.

Gorditas de maĂz quebrado are considered a classic food of Cadereyta and are available at the local market. Varieties include Migajas, Deshebrada and Nopales. The selection at individual market stalls may vary; if a particular variety matters to you, ask about what is available when you get there.
