Santos Reyes Nopala: Culture and Mountain Scenery
Accommodation in Santos Reyes Nopala
Santos Reyes Nopala is located in the Costa region of the state of Oaxaca. If you are looking for hotels here, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: should your stay be primarily about Chatina culture and archaeological history, or are you more interested in valleys and mountains, coffee, and crafts? The municipality encompasses diverse landscapes and cultural themes; the municipal seat and the northern areas of the municipality offer different geographical perspectives.
Location and scenery
The municipal seat lies in a small valley at the foot of Cerro del Atole and is surrounded by mountains: Cerro de la Iglesia to the north, Cerro del Pajarito to the east, Cerro Travieso to the southeast, and Cerro del Atole to the west. The Sierra Madre del Sur continues through the northern part of the municipality, where coffee plantations and pine-oak forests are found. The Río del Maíz runs along the edge of Nopala. The Río La Neblina flows toward the road to Cerro del Aire. Hydrologically, the municipality belongs to region RH 21, Costa de Oaxaca, and to catchment area C Río Colotepec y Otros.
Archaeological heritage
Santos Reyes Nopala was inhabited around 800 BCE and reached its greatest flourishing between 500 and 700 CE. The Palacio Municipal of Santos Reyes Nopala preserves archaeological pieces created by the Chatina culture, including anthropomorphic monoliths from this Classic period. Twelve stelae are set into the walls of the Palacio Municipal. Stone structures, pyramids, ball courts, and other parts of a once-prosperous city have also been investigated in the area; the archaeological site has not yet been fully excavated. Taken together, the dates, monoliths, and stelae offer concrete evidence of the town’s long history.
Art and cultural traditions
The mural La Huerta at the entrance to Santos Reyes Nopala was described in 2021 as a welcome for visitors. At a cultural presentation in 2024, Sones and Chilenas were performed in connection with the Boda Chatina and Torna Boda of Santos Reyes Nopala. The Jarabe del Guajolote also originates in the town. These examples point to different forms of cultural expression: a mural in a public space, music and dance at a presentation, and a dance with local roots. If you would like to see a particular performance, check the current event schedule in advance.
Coffee and crafts
During the municipal planning period of 2008–2010, coffee production was the municipality’s most important agricultural activity; the plan gives figures of 2,800 hectares and 500 producers for that period. The artisanal processing of coffee into ground coffee is considered attractive to tourists. The municipality also has small craft workshops of various kinds, staffed predominantly by women. Coffee and crafts thus complement the town’s cultural and archaeological themes with a look at agricultural work and local production.
Getting there and choosing a hotel
A route description published in 2015 gives the road route via Federal Highway 135 toward Puerto Escondido; at San Gabriel Mixtepec, turn right onto an unpaved road. Before setting out, check the current route and road conditions. Then compare the details for each specific hotel, especially its location, services, price, and availability.
