Religious and civic objects from the viceregal period shape the collection of the Museo del Ex Convento de Yanhuitlán. The collection also includes a facsimile copy of the Codex Yanhuitlán, four processional archangels and four colonial-era statues of Christ. The museum is part of the Ruta Dominica in the Mixteca Alta; this places the individual works of art within their regional cultural context.

Monastery, Temple and Art

The Centro y Ex Convento de Santo Domingo is considered an outstanding example of 16th-century New Spanish architecture. The church of Santo Domingo Yanhuitlán was built in 1541 during the colonial period using stone from the region. It preserves an original Baroque retable, created before 1575 and attributed to Andrés de la Concha. The temple associated with the Museo del Ex Convento de Santo Domingo Yanhuitlán is listed as part of Mexico's national cultural heritage.

The Acueducto also tells the story of the site's construction: remains of a hydraulic structure dating from the mid-16th century have been preserved. It was built mainly to supply water to the temple and monastery. The Capilla del Calvario offers another religious connection and houses the Virgen de la Concepción.

Geology and Landscape

The Las Conchas Geotrail is a 3 km geopark route. It includes badlands, ravines, erosional amphitheaters, paleosols, alluvial landforms and archaeological ruins. The route passes by Quaternary deposits and the Yanhuitlán Formation. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The Centro de Interpretación del Geoparque in Santo Domingo Yanhuitlán houses fossils, minerals and soil monoliths that illustrate the region's geological history. This is distinct from Paraje Las Conchas: there, rock formations resemble shells, and the area is suitable for hiking and other recreational activities.

Paraje Los Álamos (Yudayoo) is considered a forest reserve and fossil site. Since 2007, measures have been carried out there to conserve soil, reforest the area and collect rainwater. In addition to the Geotrail, these include other landscape features, from striking rock formations to an area where conservation measures have been implemented.
