Discover Paracho: Guitar Craftsmanship and Culture
Accommodation in Paracho
Paracho de Verduzco is internationally known for the handcrafted production of acoustic guitars and other stringed instruments. Visiting local workshops gives you the chance to learn about the guitar-making process up close. In addition to guitars, the guitar makers handcraft violins, mandolins, and charangos. This draws attention not only to the guitar, but also to a broader range of stringed instrument making.
Guitar Craftsmanship and Cultural Sites
The 2020 tourism plan places the Museo de la Guitarra Antigua within the Casa de la Cultura and notes that it hosts art workshops and exhibitions. The Casa de la Cultura was inaugurated in 1929 by decree of President Lázaro Cárdenas and remains a cultural landmark for the region. Another part of the instrument-making tradition is the Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo de la Guitarra, which has trained local guitarists since 1994. The museum, cultural activities, and training offer different perspectives on the guitar tradition: its instruments, artistic offerings, and the passing on of guitar playing.
The cultural landscape is not limited to instruments. Local craft traditions include wood carvings, textiles and rebozos, as well as wooden toys. The community chapels are also part of the cultural heritage: their folk architecture dates back to the 16th century. In Paracho, you can therefore explore handicrafts, the making of stringed instruments, and historic architecture as distinct themes.
Monuments and Nature in the Municipality
At the northern entrance to Paracho, the eight-meter-high Monumento a la Mujer Purépecha welcomes visitors. At the southern entrance to the municipality stands the Monumento a la Guitarra: a ten-meter-high copper monument commemorating the town’s most important craft. With their locations and respective associations with Paracho, the two monuments offer distinct landmarks.
Parque Comunal Tata Vasco is located at the southern entrance to the town. The nature reserve covers around 17 hectares and offers opportunities for hiking and camping. The municipality also offers cycling opportunities, with several bicycle routes set up in the municipal seat for residents and visitors. Hiking and camping in the nature reserve are thus available alongside cycling as different activities. The municipality of Paracho can be reached via Federal Highway 37 from Carapan to Lázaro Cárdenas.
Festivals and Regional Cuisine
The Feria Internacional de la Guitarra takes place in the first week of August. At the Festival de Globos de Cantoya, colorful paper balloons light up the night sky over Paracho on the third weekend of July. The festivals therefore take place at different times in the summer; the exact dates may vary from year to year. Check the dates for the year of your trip.
Purépecha cuisine in Paracho includes churipo, corundas, atole de grano, and atápakua, as well as Michoacán-style carnitas. Together with the craft traditions and guitar festivals, these dishes represent another facet of local culture.
