In Lagunillas, local history, individual natural areas, and planned recreational uses can be distinguished from one another. Cristo Rey provides a historic landmark; the areas along the Cuanajo River, in the railway zone, and on Cerro “La Cruz” each have their own locations and designated uses. This overview can help you decide what to focus on during your stay when choosing a hotel.

Natural Areas and Protected Areas

An ecological reserve with secondary oak forest vegetation has been designated for protection and restoration. It lies northeast of the settlement center and includes the slopes of Cerro “El Aguila” to the north and the area around Cerrito “Fontezuelas” to the northwest. Thus, two named landscape features are associated with this reserve: the Cerro slopes and the Cerrito on the northwestern edge.

At the municipal level, the view extends to a larger area. The terrain includes the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, valleys between the mountains, the Sierra del Tigre, and Cerro del Aguila. Mixed forest with pines, oaks, and cedars predominates in the municipality. These details describe the municipality’s natural environment; the ecological areas around the town each have their own designated boundaries and uses.

River, Railway Area, and Southern Slope

Linear Ecological Park 1 is designated for recreational use across 9.00 hectares. It includes the Cuanajo River and its riverbank slopes along its course through Lagunillas from west to east. Its riverside location and alignment along the town distinguish this area from the other designated areas.

Linear Ecological Park 2 covers 5.50 hectares and includes the federally owned railway land and the railway station north of Lagunillas. This area is also designated for recreation. Its geographic reference is therefore the railway zone to the north, rather than Park 1’s river corridor.

South of Lagunillas, a 25.60-hectare ecotourism zone lies on the slopes of Cerro “La Cruz.” It contains secondary vegetation of tropical deciduous forest and planted pastureland. Recreation and low-impact ecotourism are planned there; permanent infrastructure is not permitted. This condition shapes the designated use: the focus is on low-impact ecotourism without permanent infrastructure.

The areas differ both in size and in their intended uses. The southern zone, at 25.60 hectares, is larger than river-related Park 1, at 9.00 hectares, and Park 2, at 5.50 hectares. Together with their different locations, this creates a clear spatial orientation: riverbanks, railway land, and the hillside area form distinct focal points in local planning.

Cristo Rey and Regional Orientation

Cristo Rey is a historic 19th-century building in Lagunillas and is now used for public worship. Its historical significance and present-day religious function are both part of the town’s cultural character. For travelers interested in architectural history, it is a specific point of reference, while the natural areas offer a different way to explore the surroundings.

The municipality of Lagunillas is 30 kilometers from the state capital and is connected by Federal Highway No. 14 Morelia–Pátzcuaro. Morelia–Pátzcuaro is the name of Federal Highway No. 14. The mountainous terrain and predominant mixed forest are also important features of the landscape at the municipal level.

For geographic orientation, the planned areas lie on different sides of the settlement center: the reserve is located to the northeast, with the area around Cerrito “Fontezuelas” to the northwest; Park 2 lies to the north, and the zone on Cerro “La Cruz” to the south. The Cuanajo corridor crosses Lagunillas from west to east. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore distinguish between local history, the river landscape, and natural areas in different locations.
