Cobblestone streets and passages, two-tone houses with tiled roofs, old churches, green valleys and an enigmatic landscape define Tapalpa. In the town center, you’ll find cultural landmarks; the Explanada and the Portales can be explored on foot. Nearby, you’ll also find natural attractions and activities. This gives you the option of focusing on the townscape and culture or adding excursions in the surrounding landscape.

Town Center, Churches and Exhibitions

Tapalpa’s central visitor area includes the Explanada and the Portales. You can explore both on foot; the Templo de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe is a prominent visual landmark in the center. The Mercado Municipal is recommended for a meal during a visit to the town center. Together, these offer different stops in the center: a public space, a religious building and a place to eat.

The building known as the Templo Antiguo de San Antonio, also called the Antigua Iglesia de Tapalpa, has served as the Museo de Arte Sacro since 2012. The Casa de la Cultura hosts exhibitions. The two venues offer different cultural experiences: religious art at the Museo de Arte Sacro and exhibitions at the Casa de la Cultura.

Another cultural landmark is in nearby Atacco: the Farmacia Viviente Ijiyoteotl is housed in the historic Ex Hospital de Indios. It shares knowledge of herbalism and traditional medicine and is run by women who preserve traditional knowledge. Its focus broadens the picture of the area beyond religious buildings and exhibitions, bringing traditional healing knowledge to the fore.

Getting There and Planning
