Mineral Del Monte: Mining History and Culture
Accommodation in Mineral Del Monte
Mineral Del Monte, also known as Real del Monte, has held the designation of Pueblo Mágico since October 27, 2004. Its mining history is reflected in preserved structures, medical collections, objects from miners’ daily lives, and a cemetery with diverse origins represented. There are also cultural programs, walking tours, viewpoints, forest landscapes, and a local paste tradition. When planning your stay, you can decide which of these perspectives you would like to focus on.
Mining history in buildings and collections
The Mina de Acosta preserves its original layout from its establishment in 1727, along with an aqueduct and the enclosing walls. The layout and walls provide architectural clues, while the aqueduct brings another element of the complex into view.
The Museo de Medicina Laboral adds to this perspective with medical furniture and equipment that have been in use since it opened. It was founded in 1907. This shifts the focus from the mine complex to the medical objects that form part of industrial and medical history.
The Museo del Paste has a section featuring objects used by English miners. The English Cemetery adds another aspect of the town’s history: established around the middle of the 19th century, it contains 755 graves made of masonry and marble, all facing east. People of English, Scottish, Irish, German, Dutch, and Chinese origins are buried there. The graves’ shared orientation sits alongside the diversity of origins represented.
Walking tours and cultural programs
Daytime walking tours in the Pueblo Mágico visit well-known places and viewpoints; nighttime tours feature legends and folk tales. The focus differs: during the day, it is on places and views; at night, on stories.
The Monumento al Minero depicts an anonymous miner with his tools in a bronze statue. The Museo Casa Grande adds to this perspective with collections, exhibitions, editorial presentations, theater performances, musical performances, guided tours, and educational programs.
Views and landscape
The Mirador TurĂstico Plaza la PurĂsima offers panoramic views of Real del Monte. Visitors can also take photos wearing a miner’s helmet and buy handicrafts or souvenirs there. The monumental Real del Monte letters stand in the upper section of the main garden and are presented as a spot for panoramic photos of the historic center and its surroundings. The photo opportunities therefore differ: at the mirador, the focus is on views of Real del Monte; at the letters, on the historic center and its surroundings.
The Bosque del Hiloche is a misty, humid, cool forest with rural landscapes and views of wooded areas and mining sites. It complements the historical themes with a landscape perspective that encompasses both forest and mining areas.
Paste tradition and getting there
Visitors can take part in preparing traditional paste, a specialty particularly highlighted in the Pueblo Mágico. English miners ate paste as food in the mine. This connects food culture with mining history and an activity centered on the local tradition.
If you arrive by bus in Pachuca, you can reach Real del Monte by taxi or collective transport. Plan your specific connection for your travel date and check journey times and fares in advance.
