Atotonilco El Grande: Architectural History and Feria
Accommodation in Atotonilco El Grande
Atotonilco El Grande brings together architectural and art history with events that take place every year. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish historic buildings from events tied to specific dates: the Ex-Convento dates from the 16th century, while the patronal festival and Feria del Calvario take place every year on the first Friday of Lent.
Ex-Convento and Capilla de El Calvario
The Ex-Convento de San AgustĂn was built between 1542 and 1562. Its rather simple façade is designed in the Plateresque style and features paired columns and medallions; the complex also includes a distinctive open chapel. This description combines an understated overall impression with specific façade features and an open chapel.
The surviving murals at the Ex-Convento also offer insight into its artistic design: they depict episodes from the Passion of Christ. A group of paintings on the staircase features scenes from the life of Saint Augustine, surrounded by six Greek philosophers. The groups of images have different focuses—the Passion scenes in the murals and the life of Saint Augustine in the staircase ensemble. This comparison brings the building’s different subjects into focus.
The Capilla de El Calvario was built in 1887 in the center of Atotonilco El Grande. Its construction took place considerably later than that of the Ex-Convento. This makes it possible to distinguish two different periods in the town’s history.
Local History at the Museo Comunitario “El Jagüey”
The Museo Comunitario “El JagĂĽey” is located in the center and presents local history through books from the collections of Antonio Peñafiel and VĂctor Manuel Ballesteros, as well as photographs of local residents. Books and photographs offer different perspectives: the books belong to the collections mentioned, while the photographs show members of the local community. The museum thus complements the architectural history with its own focus on local history and its photographic records.
Feria, Festival and Market Days
The patronal festival of the Capilla de El Calvario takes place every year on the first Friday of Lent. The Feria del Calvario is also held annually on this date; it is celebrated in honor of the Señor de Tezoquipan. A Festival de Mole de Guajolote takes place as part of the Feria. If you want to travel specifically for the festivities, use the first Friday of Lent as your guide and check the exact date for the year in question.
The traditional market in the center follows a different schedule: it takes place on Thursdays and Sundays. The market days provide an additional point of reference alongside the annual festival date. If the market is important to your visit, confirm the days of the week locally in advance.
Tours and Getting Around
A notice dated January 13, 2025, announced planned tours of the Ex-Convento de San AgustĂn de Hipona, during which parts of its architecture and history would be explained. If you plan to take a tour, confirm its availability before you travel.
As a rough guide for your planning, the municipality says Atotonilco El Grande is about 40 minutes from Pachuca.
