The two beaches, Playa Larga and Playa Blanca, are part of Barra De Potosí. The Laguna de Potosí, the estuary and the Morros de Potosí also define the area's natural attractions. When looking for a hotel, consider whether beaches, birdwatching, culture or regional cuisine should be the focus of your trip. The area's varied nature and traditions make Barra De Potosí a destination that cannot be described by its beaches alone.

Beaches and waterscapes

Playa Larga and Playa Blanca are the two beaches of Barra De Potosí. The sandbar separates the lagoon from the sea; during the rainy season, the water rises there. This seasonal change is part of the landscape and a practical point of reference when planning your travel dates. So, alongside the beach names, consider the lagoon and estuary as natural attractions in their own right: they offer different impressions from a stay by the sea.

Birdwatching and excursions

The Barra De Potosí estuary is a natural refuge for hundreds of bird species that breed there every year. Barra De Potosí is also home to more than 270 migratory and locally native bird species. Birdlife is therefore a distinct focus alongside the beaches.

Small boats offer birdwatching trips and photographic safaris along the shores of the Laguna de Potosí. Both activities focus on the lagoon and its birdlife; confirm the boats' availability locally. This lets you experience the lagoon landscape from a different perspective than the view of the estuary.

The Morros de Potosí are large rock formations in the Pacific. On an excursion, you can see caves and clear water there. This makes the trip different from birdwatching excursions: the focus here is on rock formations, caves and water. Sea conditions and excursion availability may vary; confirm locally whether the trip is possible before making plans.

Traditions and handicrafts

For decades, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe has been celebrated in Barra De Potosí on December 12. During the festival, a procession passes through the town, and decorated boats make a religious journey on the lagoon. If you plan to travel for the festival, check the event dates in advance.

A 2020 UAM publication reports that the women's group “Espátulas Rosadas” sold handicrafts in the wider regional area. The group is therefore a regional point of interest, not an activity directly in the town. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether it is currently active.

Regional cuisine and sunrise

Rustic restaurants on the beach in Barra De Potosí serve tortillas cooked on a comal, molcajete salsas, and fresh fish and seafood. These dishes give you specific pointers to the local cuisine without implying any particular restaurant.

If you want to see the sunrise in Barra De Potosí, it's best to get up early. The time varies with the season, so take this seasonal difference into account if you plan your morning around it.
