At La Quebrada, divers from the region leap from heights of more than 45 meters into a narrow sea inlet between impressive cliffs. In Guerrero, these coastal experiences sit alongside lagoon landscapes, archaeological sites, and museums. Deciding which of these different aspects to prioritize on your trip can help guide your choice of base and hotel.

Coast, Lagoons, and Nature

At Laguna de Coyuca, visitors can take excursions in flat-bottomed boats and observe the natural surroundings. Pie de la Cuesta is characterized by a tropical lagoon ecosystem that includes Laguna de Coyuca and a lush mangrove zone. The boat trips and the habitat described offer two different perspectives on the water: one as the setting for a ride, the other as part of a landscape with mangroves.

Playa Bonfil is a meeting place for surfers seeking challenging waves and spectacular sunsets. Acapulco’s largest turtle conservation camp is also located there. Playa Bonfil is therefore shaped by two distinct themes: the waves and sunsets that attract surfers, and turtle conservation. These specific interests can help you narrow down the focus of your trip.

Archaeological Sites and Their Stories

Soledad de Maciel is an ancient city characterized by river stone and adobe. Its partially excavated ball court may be one of the largest in Mesoamerica. To get there, take the Acapulco–Zihuatanejo federal highway, turn off at Petatlán–San Jerónimo, and then continue along a local road. As road conditions may change, check them before setting out. Visiting hours are listed as Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:00; confirm the hours before your visit.

At Tehuacalco, residents observed the stars to calculate the time and the length of the year and its seasons. This gives the site a special connection to observing the sky. At Los Tepoltzis, a small ceremonial center on hilltops near Tixtla, surviving stone masks and figurines tell of the stoneworking skills of its residents. The archaeological site is temporarily closed.

Ixcateopan was the first zone of historic monuments to be declared in Mexico. Its historic center is paved with obsidian. The town is also associated with the tradition that Cuauhtémoc’s remains are kept in the church of Santa María Asunción. Grutas de Cacahuamilpa National Park, meanwhile, encompasses one of Mexico’s most impressive and most visited cave systems, as well as geological formations. Together, these places showcase different archaeological and geological themes across Guerrero.

Fortress and Museums

Fuerte de San Diego was completed in April 1617. After an earthquake in 1776, it was rebuilt and completed again in 1783. The fort houses the Museo Histórico de Acapulco. It presents the port’s early history and explores stories and legends from the era of the Manila galleons. The building and museum thus offer two historical points of interest: the fort’s eventful construction history and Acapulco’s past as a port.

The Museo Regional de Guerrero is located in Chilpancingo in a building constructed in 1902, formerly used as a government palace and considered the city’s only officially registered historic monument. The museum opened to the public in March 1987. Its scope includes Guerrero’s geography, the pre-Hispanic era, Spanish rule, and the struggle for independence. It also covers the pursuit of political and territorial autonomy, social struggles in the south, and economic activities and cultural expressions. Its breadth therefore differs considerably from the Museo Histórico de Acapulco’s focus on port history and the Manila galleons.

Getting There and Choosing a Base

Acapulco is accessible via the Autopista del Sol and by air and sea. When planning your trip, you could first consider whether you are especially interested in Acapulco’s coastal and museum attractions, lagoons and nature, or archaeological sites.
