San Pedro de las Colonias offers several cultural and historical points of interest: a protected historic center, designated monuments, the history of Francisco I. Madero, and traditional buildings. These aspects span the center’s protected status and individual buildings and their histories.

Historic Center and Monuments

A decree published in 2017 designates the historic center of San Pedro de las Colonias as a protected zone and identifies the city as the municipal seat of San Pedro municipality in Coahuila. The protected status applies to the historic town center as a zone, while the list of monuments identifies specific buildings. The historic monuments named there include the Museo de La Revolución (Casa de Cantera), the Parroquia de San Pedro Apóstol, the Palacio Municipal de Gobierno, the cine Plaza, the Escuela Centenario, the Casa de la Cultura, and the Estación de Ferrocarril.

Casa de Cultura: Programs and History

The cultural program of Casa de Cultura de San Pedro de las Colonias, last updated in 2023, lists theater performances, recitals, concerts, and exhibitions. It also mentions classes in piano, painting, guitar, theater, modern dance, and chess. If you plan to attend a specific class or performance, check the latest schedule in advance.

The history of the house is linked to Francisco I. Madero and his wife, Sarita Pérez. They lived in the building from September 1893. They provided travelers and families in need with accommodation and meals, sometimes for extended periods, and fed about 50 children every day. In 1908, Madero wrote and printed the first edition of La Sucesión Presidencial in the same building. It comprised 3,000 copies and was distributed among intellectuals and journalists. The years mark distinct chapters in the house’s history: first, life there and social support from 1893 onward, and later the publication of the book in 1908.

Casa de Cultura also displays photographs of all the queens crowned at the traditional Feria de San Pedro de las Colonias, as well as the first program for the Feria. The display may change.

Market, Clock Tower, and Museum

The more than 100-year-old Benito Juárez Market is located in the center of San Pedro. Its architectural features include adobe walls and roofs made of galvanized sheet metal; its current condition may change. The market is considered one of the city’s traditional gathering places. At the Reloj Público, a different architectural detail catches the eye: its tower is surrounded by a balcony made of wrought iron.

San Pedro is also home to the Museo Centenario de la Revolución, which is part of the state museum system. Possible activities include guided tours, workshops, and activities for children and adults. Before your visit, check whether and when these activities are available.
