If you are looking for a hotel in General Cepeda, the town’s history and paleontological connections can shape how you see the destination. The historic center is a designated protected zone; the Museo de Historia Atlahuaco brings together paleontological, archaeological, revolutionary history, and everyday life collections. Rincón Colorado is in the municipality of General Cepeda and is Mexico’s first paleontological site developed for public visits. The town’s architectural history, museum collections, and paleontological site offer different points of interest for planning a trip.

Historic Center and Molino Colorado

The historic center of General Cepeda is a designated protected zone. It covers 525,596.09 m² and 36 blocks. The designation was published in the Official Gazette of the State on April 2, 2014. The area and number of blocks specify the extent of the designated zone.

A separate chapter in the town’s history concerns Molino Colorado in the municipal seat of General Cepeda. It was built in 1586 as a grain mill for the country’s largest estate and later belonged to the Sánchez Navarro family. Its function and later ownership are documented: first its use as a mill, then its association with the family. The building’s history adds a specific historical point of reference to the protected center.

Collections at the Museo de Historia Atlahuaco

The paleontological collection at the Museo de Historia Atlahuaco includes coprolites, ammonites, seeds, fruits, dinosaur bones, tree trunks, and palms. The archaeological collection also includes arrowheads, mortars, and petroglyphs. The two collections have different focuses: one is devoted to paleontological evidence, the other to archaeological objects.

The revolutionary collection also includes a distinct group of objects: ammunition belts, rifles, cannonballs and pistol bullets, pistols, and items known as frenos pateños. The social life collection lists irons and agricultural tools, as well as jaras, a sewing machine, cutlery, chests, keys, measuring weights, cameras, radios, and a film projector. The museum collections therefore place weapons and equipment alongside tools and objects from everyday life.

Another collection consists of historical photographs. It includes images of revolutionary figures, prominent people, and buildings, as well as depictions of ghosts from local legends. Taken together, these areas offer different thematic perspectives: natural history, archaeology, the Revolution, social life, and local visual records. If you are interested in a particular topic, you can consider these focuses as different aspects of the town’s history.

Paleontology in the Municipality

Rincón Colorado is in the municipality of General Cepeda and is Mexico’s first paleontological site developed for public visits. The distinction is also a factual one: Rincón Colorado is a paleontological site, whereas the collection at the Museo de Historia Atlahuaco is a museum collection in the municipal seat.

Another package included a visit to a paleontological site museum, where original fossils and the original tail of a duck-billed dinosaur were to be shown.

A package also listed for 2025 included a visit to a cheese factory. Demonstrations were planned on making cuajada, fresh cheese, Oaxaca-style ball-shaped asadero cheese, and requesĂłn.
