Cerocahuí: Hotels between the Mission and Vineyards
Accommodation in Cerocahuí
Cerocahuí brings together Jesuit heritage, winemaking and excursions into the mountain landscape. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: history, vineyards, or viewpoints and nature. Hotel Misión Cerocahui combines several of these themes with its own offerings, including walks and guided horseback rides.
Jesuit Heritage in Cerocahuí
The Misión de San Francisco Javier is a cultural landmark in Cerocahuí. It was built in 1680 at the instigation of Jesuit missionary Juan María de Salvatierra. Its founding year and connection to Salvatierra give the mission a specific historical context. If you are interested in Jesuit history, it is a clear cultural highlight of your trip.
The atrium of the Parroquia de San Francisco Javier in Cerocahuí is a separate memorial site. The Jesuits Javier Campos and Joaquín Mora are buried there. Their names give this place a specific connection to the two Jesuits and add to the destination’s religious heritage.
Vineyards and Agriculture in the Valley
Hotel Misión Cerocahui is located in a fertile valley with vineyards and apple orchards, surrounded by the Sierra Madre. You can walk through the adjacent vineyards, where the hotel’s own wines are produced. This connects the valley landscape with a specific hotel offering. The Cerocahuí wine-growing region produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Tempranillo and Sauvignon Blanc. The Cerocahuí Vendimia is considered a traditional and popular grape harvest celebration. If you are planning your trip specifically around this celebration, check the dates in advance.
Viewpoints and Nature Excursions
Near Cerocahuí is the Cerro del Gallego viewpoint, at an elevation of 2,400 meters above sea level. Pine and oak trees surround the viewpoint, which faces the canyon’s precipice. Facilities include covered seating areas, barbecue grills, parking and restrooms. There is also a suspension bridge and a platform suspended over the canyon, designed for photography and taking in the views. As facilities may change, check what is available before your visit.
In Cerocahuí, you can book guided excursions to Cerro del Gallego; tour operators may change. Cascada de Yepáravo is also a natural attraction in the surrounding area. Rafting is possible on the nearby Río Urique, provided you have experience in the sport. The excursion options therefore differ considerably: Cerro del Gallego focuses on the viewpoint, suspension bridge and platform, while rafting requires prior experience.
