When planning a trip to Los Plátanos, it is also worth exploring the municipality of Chínipas’s tourist attractions. These include viewpoints at Cerro del Recodo, a public recreational area on the Río Chínipas and historic structures. Chínipas is shaped by its mining past, its connection to Rarámuri culture and its colonial heritage. Mining remains and natural resources are also among the municipality’s tourist attractions. This lets you consider nature and scenic experiences alongside cultural and historical themes.

Views and access routes at Cerro del Recodo

The Mirador del Cerro del Recodo is one of the most important tourist viewpoints in the municipality of Chínipas because of its elevation and location. It can be reached by vehicle, along a path or by stairs. One access option is the newer Escaleras del Cerro del Recodo staircase, with 1,348 steps. It starts at the foot of Cerro del Recodo, beside the Río Chínipas, and leads to the viewpoint of the same name. When choosing between a vehicle, path and stairs, the number of steps is the specific figure given for the climb up the staircase.

La Virgencita, a rock formation bearing an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, lies between the viewpoint and the summit of Cerro del Recodo. The image’s base is usually reached on foot. Next to the formation is a grotto that you can climb through to reach the summit. La Virgencita is therefore neither the viewpoint nor the summit: it lies between them, while the neighboring grotto provides the described climbing route upward.

Recreational area on the Río Chínipas

The Río Chínipas has a different character from the viewpoint: it is a public family recreation area with densely leafy willows. It is easy to reach on foot or by vehicle. Visits are possible during most of the year, except for the rainy season. If you plan to spend time by the river, take this seasonal restriction into account when scheduling your visit.

Mining history and colonial heritage in Chínipas

The Acueducto Los Arcos links a historic structure with the region’s mining history. A 154-meter-long section is almost entirely intact and dates from the 17th century. It was built of rubble stone and lime and used to grind minerals extracted from the Palmarejo mine. This function places the aqueduct not only in its historical period but also in the context of its role in processing the extracted raw materials. The Acueducto Los Arcos is located in Chínipas de Almada on private property. Entry onto the property is not prohibited, provided the structure is respected; confirm access locally before your visit.

The Antigua Hacienda El Zapote is also part of the region’s mining history: during the regional mining boom, it was used to separate minerals. On a visit, one of the owners welcomes visitors, shares the history and shows old mining objects. If you plan to learn more, arrange your visit in advance.

The Iglesia Santa Inés adds a specific date to these historical themes: construction began in 1632. The Acueducto Los Arcos also dates from the 17th century, placing both structures in the same period, although the start of construction of the church is dated more precisely. The buildings represent different aspects of the local heritage: one its religious architecture, the other the processing of minerals for mining.
