Discover Mexicali: Culture, History and Cuisine
Accommodation in Mexicali
Mexicali brings together urban history and culture with a cuisine that combines Chinese and Mexican influences. Excursions to the surrounding area can also be part of your travel plans. If you’re looking for a hotel in Mexicali, you can start by considering whether you’d like to focus on historic sites, local food culture, or destinations outside the city.
History and Culture in Mexicali
Museo Sol del Niño is located in La Jabonera del PacĂfico, a historic building that served as a cottonseed warehouse in the 1950s. After standing empty for 30 years, the structure was restored to preserve a cultural heritage site recognized by INAH. The museum’s more than 260 exhibits are spread across Casa de la EnergĂa, Pirámide del Hombre, Plaza del Sol, Mezanine de ComunicaciĂłn, Sala de Exhibiciones Temporales, and Domo Digital. The building’s former industrial use and its different exhibition areas show two distinct facets of the site.
Casa de la Cultura de Mexicali tells another chapter in the city’s history. The building was inaugurated on September 16, 1916, as Escuela Superior Mixta Cuauhtémoc and was Mexicali’s first formal school. It was built of reinforced concrete, with wooden ceilings and wooden mezzanines. Later, it served as an elementary school, a high school, and a university, among other uses, as well as the home of the UABC rector’s office. Since 1974, it has been Casa de la Cultura de Mexicali. Its history reflects both its original educational function and its later uses.
El Tecolote is also connected to the city’s eventful history. The building was constructed in 1924 to replace the original Casino El Tecolote, which was destroyed by fire in 1922. Its North American owners, Allen, Beyers, and Wittigton, named it ABW CLUB; in Mexicali, it became known as El Tecolote. The casino could accommodate up to 3,000 guests, who watched international performers there. These details refer to the building’s former use, not to events held there today.
Centro Histórico de Mexicali brings together history, architecture, and culture. In 2023, the La Chinesca neighborhood was also designated a Barrio Mágico de México. The cuisine reflects cultural connections too: Mexicali has dishes born from a fusion of Chinese and Mexican cuisines. Chinese New Year is celebrated as a local tradition, with applause, a diverse food offering, and the traditional dragon dance. These features offer different ways to get to know Mexicali beyond its historic buildings.
Leisure and Excursions in the Surrounding Area
A municipal family program presented on April 15, 2025, listed a farm, a carousel, an aviary, a sack slide, and a dinosaur zone as planned attractions at Bosque y Zoológico de Mexicali. For Ecoparque Laguna México, it listed bicycle paths, children’s play areas, and an area for dogs. CDHI Centenario was included as a place for relaxation and leisure, with palapas; according to the announcement, using them would not incur additional charges. Parque Vicente Guerrero was described as a 91,100-square-meter recreation complex with areas for leisure, events, and exhibitions. For Centro Recreativo Juventud 2000, the program listed grills, green spaces, palapas, and children’s play areas. Since the program was presented in 2025, check the latest visitor information before making specific plans.
There are more options to consider beyond the city. Dunas de Cuervitos is about an hour east of Mexicali, where sandboarding is possible. RĂo Hardy is about 45 minutes from the center of Mexicali. It is 26 kilometers long and is a navigable branch of the Colorado River, which comes from the United States. The two destinations therefore differ in their described activities and distance: sandboarding is the focus at the dunes, while RĂo Hardy is a navigable river. In the wider Mexicali region, birdwatching—with more than 350 species, including migratory and endemic birds—is considered an attraction. This birdwatching opportunity is a separate regional feature and is not a claim about RĂo Hardy.
Getting There and Choosing a Hotel
Mexicali is accessible by air via its airport. The stated land routes are the border crossing from the United States or Federal Highway 5. When looking for a hotel in Mexicali, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your stay: urban history and culture, Chinese-Mexican cuisine, or an excursion to the surrounding area.
