Discover El Sauzal: Surfing History, Wine and Culture
Accommodation in El Sauzal
El Sauzal brings together a distinctive surfing history, nature watching, regional wine and a historic residence that is now home to the Casa-Museo Abelardo L. RodrĂguez. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, these varied themes can help you choose a destination: Playa San Miguel is all about the beach and surfing, while Arroyo San Miguel and the town’s history reveal other facets of the area.
Playa San Miguel: Beach and Surfing History
Playa San Miguel is a rocky beach where people surf and camp. It is located on the Tijuana–Ensenada highway in El Sauzal de RodrĂguez. The beach also has a connection to surfing history: the Baja Surf Club, whose meeting place was Playa San Miguel, held Mexico’s First International Surfing Tournament there in 1966. Playa San Miguel is considered the birthplace of surfing in Mexico.
The Playa San Miguel and Arroyo San Miguel area is used for cultural, sporting, educational and tourism activities. Families often have picnics and enjoy other recreational activities on the beach and in the woodlands along the arroyo. Birdlife is another draw for nature watchers: an ecological study recorded 107 bird species in the area, which is frequently visited by birdwatchers. This figure is the result of a survey and may be updated by later studies.
Nature and Local Transit in the Arroyo San Miguel Area
Arroyo San Miguel is considered one of the best-preserved and least altered streams in the urban area of Ensenada. This adds an ecological perspective to the coastal experience: the study describes both the condition of the stream and the area’s importance for birdwatching and recreational activities.
A technical study describes public transit connections to the Arroyo San Miguel and Playa San Miguel area and names two companies that provide service from downtown Ensenada. Before traveling, check which operators and routes are currently in service.
Casa-Museo and the History of the Residence
The Casa-Museo Abelardo L. RodrĂguez presents regional history, promotes cultural activities and hosts exhibitions. On display are objects and photographs of Abelardo L. RodrĂguez and other figures from the Mexican Revolution. RodrĂguez and his family lived in the residence that is now the museum from 1930 to 1967, except during the years when he held government posts in the presidential cabinet.
Hacienda El Sauzal was designed in 1930 by architect Frank Walter Stevenson (1892–1968) as a country home for General de DivisiĂłn Abelardo L. RodrĂguez. It is recognized as a cultural heritage site of Baja California and is located in the El Sauzal de RodrĂguez Delegation in the Ensenada Municipality. Its architecture combines a range of distinctive features: red tile roofs, stucco walls, round arches and balustraded balconies, along with Arabic- and Moorish-style latticework, Corinthian columns, Ionic elements, towers with chimneys and French windows.
Regional Wine in El Sauzal
Wine is another option to enjoy during a stay: at the D’Varios Tasting Room in El Sauzal, guests can sample a menu and more than 80 regional wines. Alongside the beach, nature and history, it offers a specific opportunity to discover local wines.
