Bahía Asunción combines a long sandy beach with a location within the El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve. La Bufadora, tidal pools, and wildlife viewing give the coast its distinctive character; water sports and activities in the hilly hinterland are also available. Tides, seasonal wildlife-viewing opportunities, and access rules for the islands are especially relevant when planning your visit.

Coast, Tides, and Island Nature

The town is located on a long sandy beach. La Bufadora forms natural pools that can be used for swimming at high tide. You can also explore the spray and tide pools there. Whether swimming is suitable depends on the tides and conditions; take these into account when planning.

Seabird populations are recovering on nearby Isla Asunción after feral cats were eradicated. From Bahía Asunción, trips by panga or kayak to the islands from January to May are an option for wildlife viewing. Possible things to see include sea lions, nesting seabirds, seals, dolphins, and gray whales. Sightings and transport availability vary; check with local operators in advance.

Landing on the nearby islands requires a permit; regular access is limited to employees of the fishing cooperatives. Check the rules of the protected area and the cooperatives before planning a visit to an island.

Water Sports and Land Activities

Possible water activities include swimming, boogie boarding, bodyboarding, surfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, and sailing. Sea conditions can vary. Diving is also possible, focusing on marine life and observing the harvesting of wild abalone. Confirm availability with local operators when arranging a dive.

Sport fishing includes surf fishing, fishing from the rocks, and spearfishing. The availability of these activities and seasonal conditions can change. The hills and valleys around Bahía Asunción also have a singletrack mountain bike trail. Hiking, horseback riding, fossil hunting, and off-road driving are other possible activities. Check route conditions and local arrangements in advance.

Getting There and Festival Dates

From Vizcaíno, turn off the Transpeninsular Highway after the Pemex gas station. After about 60 km, you will reach the turnoff to Bahía Asunción; from there, it is another roughly half-hour drive on a well-paved road. The entire access route is paved. Signage and road conditions can change, so it is worth checking the current route before setting out.

The patron saint festivities are traditionally held every year; in 2023, they took place from August 11 to 15. The program included beach activities, horse and motorcycle races, traditional dances, jaripeo, and religious events. Check the current dates and program before your trip if you would like to plan around the festivities.
