Quevedo – Culture, Museums and Malecón
Accommodation in Quevedo
Quevedo offers several distinct cultural attractions: a city sign on the Malecón, museums with archaeological collections, and the Ronda de Confraternidad Quevedeña, featuring folklore, dance and music. If you are looking for a hotel in Quevedo, these themes can help you decide what brings you to the area. The cultural highlights range from a striking city name to archaeological collections and an event whose date you should check when planning your trip.
The City Sign on the Malecón
A city report from 2016 describes the large, brightly colored letters spelling “Quevedo” as a visitor attraction. The report locates them on the Malecón, opposite the Palacio de Cristal. The city sign offers a different focus from the archaeological collections: it makes the city’s name itself the main attraction. If the sign is an important reason for your trip, check before visiting whether it can be seen as described.
Culture at the Centro Cultural Marco Cortés
The Centro Cultural Marco Cortés brings together archaeological, visual arts, documentary and religious themes. It houses an archaeological museum with artifacts from various pre-Columbian cultures, particularly the Milagro-Quevedo culture, also known as Las Tolas. A mural by artist David Moscoso depicts traditional scenes: the Río Quevedo, the production of balsa wood and cocoa, and the area’s natural landscape. A documentation room displays photographs and original archives on the founding of important institutions. The center also includes a chapel dedicated to Cristo Redentor. These exhibits offer different cultural perspectives: archaeological objects sit alongside depictions of traditional scenes, institutional documents and a religious dedication.
Archaeological Collections in Quevedo
A city notice dated March 11, 2020, reported that the Museo Municipal de Quevedo had more than 670 archaeological objects on display, registered with the Ministerio de Patrimonio Cultural. The notice lists, among others, La Tolita, Jama Coaque, Manteña, Bahía, Daule Tejar, Huancavilca, Pansaleo and Chorrera. A museum in the Ciudadela Municipal de Quevedo displays more than 300 archaeological objects, most of them from the Milagro-Quevedo culture. Its visitors include school students and teachers from local educational institutions and from elsewhere in Ecuador. The collections have different thematic emphases: the Museo Municipal features a broad range of cultures, while the museum in the Ciudadela particularly highlights Milagro-Quevedo. The same culture is also represented in the archaeological museum at the Centro Cultural Marco Cortés.
The Ronda de Confraternidad Quevedeña
The Ronda de Confraternidad Quevedeña is a cultural event featuring folk groups, regionally rooted dance and music, floats and other traditional performances. A previously announced edition was also set to include modern dance groups, comparsas and delegations from other countries. This is a different kind of travel experience from the archaeological collections: the Ronda centers on an event held at a specific time, while the museums focus on their respective collections and exhibits. Check the dates and program if you want to plan your trip around the Ronda.
