Los Ríos: Rivers, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Los Ríos
The province of Los Ríos in Ecuador can be explored through its river landscapes, regional history, and cultural sites.
River Landscapes, Nature, and Seasonal Experiences
Babahoyo lies on the Río Babahoyo, which is fed by rivers including the Catarama, San Pablo, Zapotal, Puebloviejo, and Vinces. In Valencia, the river beaches at Balneario San Pablo are suitable for swimming and fishing. Ecuavóley championships are also held there during Carnival. If you plan a trip around this event, check the dates for the relevant year.
Balneario Chipe in Valencia also offers a river with clear water, a riverside promenade, cabins, and sports courts. These are the specific features of this bathing resort, while San Pablo is associated with its river beaches as well as its Carnival-time championships.
The Abras de Mantequilla wetland covers approximately 22,500 hectares and is recognized under the Ramsar Convention. It is home to more than 120 bird species, as well as mammals, reptiles, and fish. Visitors can observe 127 bird species and more than 20 aquatic species there. By contrast, beach activities in Zapotal are seasonal: in summer, a beach forms there that residents and tourists visit every year.
Los Ángeles offers a different kind of landscape. It is a rural town and parish in Los Ríos, situated in a valley on the Río Sibimbe and surrounded by waterfalls and other rivers. The province thus offers a range of natural settings: a wetland with diverse wildlife, a beach that forms in summer, and a town in a river valley.
History and Culture in Vinces, Babahoyo, and Quevedo
The Museo Histórico Cultural Los Chonos in Recinto El Recuerdo, in the canton of Vinces, was inaugurated in September 2025. It preserves the history, archaeology, and traditions of the canton of Vinces and the province of Los Ríos; it was founded to strengthen community tourism. The Castillo de Vinces is also considered a historically valuable heritage site.
The Regata Guayaquil–Vinces offers another historical perspective. It covers 63.4 nautical miles from Guayaquil to Vinces, takes place every year in March, and has been held since 1957. Its annual date therefore differs from that of the Carnival-time Ecuavóley championships in San Pablo. If you are planning a trip specifically around the regatta, check the event dates for your travel year.
The Ruta del Cacao Arriba is also part of Vinces’ history: it originated in the early 16th century. Its production area included Vinces and other cantons in the province of Los Ríos. Cocoa was transported along the Río Guayas to Guayaquil for export to Europe. The regatta is an annual event, while the Ruta del Cacao Arriba represents a historical story of production and transport.
In Babahoyo, Montubio traditions are considered part of Ecuador’s cultural heritage. Casa Olmedo in La Virginia, in the parish of El Salto near Babahoyo, is a heritage site in Ecuador. Its recognition is linked to the historical importance of the Tratado de la Virginia and its connection to José Joaquín de Olmedo. Olmedo was inspired there to write his work “La Victoria de Junín,” also known as “Canto a Bolívar.”
In Quevedo, the Centro Cultural Marco Cortés preserves an essential part of the canton’s history and development. The center includes an archaeological museum with artifacts from various pre-Columbian cultures, particularly the Milagro-Quevedo culture, as well as an auditorium for cultural and artistic activities.
Regional Cuisine in Valencia
In Valencia, specific dishes are also associated with particular places. Balneario Chipe is known for bollo de pescado, tortillas, and corbiches de verde. Mi Esterito, a tourist bathing resort in Valencia, is known for fried tilapia, caldo and seco de gallina criolla, and tongas. These culinary connections add regional dishes to the nature and culture themes, allowing you to associate them with specific places in Valencia.
