Historical Sites in Loubiere
During the French attacks on Dominica in 1778 and 1805, fierce fighting took place in Loubiere. The two years refer to separate historical events that give the place a specific connection to Dominica’s history.
A historical visitor guide describes the crumbling remains of masonry earthworks near Loubiere, where defenders put up resistance. The distinction in location is important: the fighting took place in Loubiere, while the remains of the earthworks are described as being near the place.
Diving also appears in a time-specific historical context: Dominica’s tourism master plan for the period 2012–2022 listed ALDive as a dive operator in Loubiere. For current diving opportunities, check up-to-date information on operators and availability before your trip.
Excursions in the Wider Destination of Saint George
Segment 4 of the Waitukubuli National Trail runs from Wotten Waven to Pont Casse. It lies in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Morne Trois Pitons National Park, is about 13.3 kilometres long, and can be completed in six hours. At the end is the Waitukubuli National Trail Research and Interpretation Facility in Pont Casse; along the segment, there are views of five mountains.
A shorter hike leads to Middleham Falls: the Middleham Trail is described as an easy-to-moderate 45-minute hike and reaches the 200-foot-high cascading waterfalls. The trail passes through the rainforest of Morne Trois Pitons National Park. Swimming is possible in the pool below the falls, although the water is a little cool.
At Trafalgar Falls, Papa Falls, at 85 metres, and Mama Falls, at 40 metres, form two cascades. A ten-minute path leads from the car park to a viewing platform. Visitors can swim in the smaller waterfall; a hot spring also flows across the path to the falls. Titou Gorge offers a different kind of water experience: a short swim leads from the foot of a waterfall through several natural chambers and pools. The high rock walls are covered by intertwined trees.
Boiling Lake is in Morne Trois Pitons National Park. The trail passes through the Valley of Desolation, by sulphur springs, steaming mud pools and volcanic terrain. Tours to Boiling Lake start in Laudat; hikers must be accompanied by a certified local guide. Before setting out, check the meeting arrangements and current requirements for guide accompaniment.
Freshwater Lake near Laudat is Dominica’s largest lake. The moderately difficult hike to Boeri Lake starts there and is 1¼ miles long. Boeri Lake lies at an elevation of 2,800 feet and covers about four acres. It is in the crater of an ancient volcano in which Morne Macaque formed. The mountain, also locally known as Morne Micotrin, separates Boeri Lake from Freshwater Lake.
The time estimates refer to different sections: six hours for Segment 4, 45 minutes for the hike to Middleham Falls, and ten minutes at Trafalgar for the path from the car park to the viewing platform. This distinguishes a longer trail section, a shorter hike and a brief walk to a viewpoint.
