Rouyn-Noranda combines botanical gardens, geological landscapes and waterside trails with city history, art and music. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, your reason for travelling can help narrow down the options: nature and outdoor activities, historical walks and museums, or a festival each offer a different focus. The following places can help you match your interests with the time available as you plan your trip.

Experience nature and geology

In central Rouyn-Noranda, on Lac Édouard, is Parc botanique À Fleur d’eau. It features more than 25,000 plants, trees and shrubs specially adapted to the climate of the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region. The park’s Geological Garden offers insight into regional geology and the development of mining. Here, plant life and the region’s geology come together in one place. The park has wheelchair-accessible paths; check conditions before your trip.

For a different geological perspective, visit Parc national d’Aiguebelle in the Mont-Brun district of Rouyn-Noranda. Its rocks are 2.7 billion years old. A 22-metre-high suspension bridge offers a view of a striking geological fault. Moose, beavers and ospreys can also be spotted there. The two nature destinations therefore offer quite different experiences: the botanical garden focuses on plants and regional mining history, while the national park features ancient rock, views of a fault and the possibility of wildlife watching.

Trails along Lac Osisko

The Sentier polyvalent Osisko runs along part of Lac Osisko, considered the founding site of Rouyn-Noranda, and passes through urban and wooded landscapes. It includes a 7.8-kilometre paved loop and an 8.2-kilometre linear section. These distances refer to different types of routes and can be taken into account when planning your day. The 7.8-kilometre route is suitable for cycling, skateboarding, inline skating and walking. When planning, you can weigh up the distance and intended mode of transport together.

City history and art

The Musée d’histoire de Rouyn-Noranda operates two sites: the Dumulon General Store and the St. George Russian Orthodox Church. Another way to explore the city’s history is the “One mine, one city” historical walking tour of Old Noranda. It takes two hours on foot, so set aside a dedicated block of time.

If you’d like to discover public art, Rouyn-Noranda’s “Eye-Catching Art” trail features 20 works by local or mostly regional artists. The Musée d’art de Rouyn-Noranda preserves a collection of more than 2,000 works. The trail highlights art in the urban landscape, while the museum offers a different experience through its collection. Together with the historical sites, they provide a range of themes to explore as you plan your trip.

Music and seasonal activities

For more than 20 years, FME (Festival de musique émergente en Abitibi-Témiscamingue) has supported emerging and independent music. Its formats include indoor and outdoor concerts, themed evenings, “5 à 7” events and so-called secret concerts. The festival brings Rouyn-Noranda to life over Labour Day weekend. As the program may change, check the event dates for your travel dates.

At RécréOsisko, visitors can borrow canoes, kayaks and pedal boats free of charge. RécréOsisko also offers bicycles for different age groups, including electric bikes and tandems, as well as the necessary accessories. In winter, users can borrow skates and snowshoes through a partnership with the public library. As watercraft and bicycle inventories and seasonal availability may change, and winter rentals depend on the current agreement, check what’s available in advance.
