Rouyn-Noranda brings together the performing arts, literature, music, film, and visual arts, as well as public art, festivals, museums, galleries, and historic sites. Offerings range from collections and guided visits to walks through former neighborhoods and trails by the water. This lets you divide your time between cultural history, events, and outdoor activities.

Museums, art, and industrial history

The Musée d’histoire de Rouyn-Noranda presents the city’s 20th-century heritage through exhibitions, cultural education activities, and initiatives beyond the museum. Historic sites operated by the museum include the Magasin général Dumulon and the Église orthodoxe russe Saint-Georges. A guided tour of the Fonderie Horne concludes at the Musée minier Horne, which explores the story of prospector Edmund Horne: the copper and gold deposit was named after him.

The Musée d’art de Rouyn-Noranda features exhibitions and a collection dedicated to the art of the Americas, with more than 2,000 works; the collection size may change over time. The museum also offers a study storage area open to the public, activities, a boutique, and a café. You can also discover public art in your own way: the “De l’art plein la vue” walk leads to public artworks, most of which were created by artists from Rouyn-Noranda or Abitibi-Témiscamingue.

Walks through the city and region

Several themed walks highlight different aspects of local history. The architectural heritage walks pass through Rouyn and Noranda’s old neighborhoods: short routes are designed for walking or cycling, and a longer one for exploring by car. On the “L’Indice du Bonheur” audio walk, 50 listening stations accompany four rural and urban routes. Historic information panels in rural communities combine explanations of local history with original artworks by Rouyn-Noranda artists.

The “Sur les traces des clochers” walk explores religious heritage through former and current places of worship belonging to different denominations. The “Parcours citatif” showcases quotations from political, cultural, sporting, and historical contexts on panels displayed on several buildings. Historic photographs and surviving buildings in the former Rouyn and Noranda neighborhoods, meanwhile, provide the basis for the urban history walks. For a short stroll through Vieux-Rouyn, “Le chemin des pionniers” takes about an hour; “Une mine, une ville” through Vieux-Noranda takes about two hours on foot. These times can help you choose between the two walks based on how much time you have.

Green spaces and waterfront trails

At Parc botanique À fleur d’eau, a wooden boardwalk runs around Lac Édouard. The park contains more than 25,000 plants, trees, and shrubs; this number may change over time. The Jardin géologique offers insights into regional geology and the development of mining. The park also offers wheelchair-accessible trails, picnic areas, pétanque courts, a baseball field, and a play area. The listed facilities may change; check current information if any of them are important to your plans.

The Sentier polyvalent Osisko passes through urban and wooded landscapes and follows part of Lac Osisko, considered the founding lake of Rouyn-Noranda. The trail is designed for bicycles, skateboards, inline skates, and pedestrians; parking is available at several points around the lake. RécréOsisko at Lac Osisko offers free rentals of bicycles and watercraft such as canoes, kayaks, and pedal boats. Rentals are available year-round, but the equipment on offer varies by season. In winter, a partnership between RécréOsisko and the city library also makes ice skates and snowshoes available to borrow. If you plan to borrow them, check the library’s schedule.

For longer outings, the Collines Kekeko are less than 12 kilometers from Rouyn-Noranda. There are 15 marked hiking trails with viewpoints, steep slopes, rock shelters, and waterfalls. The Transkekeko long-distance trail crosses the hills and takes about seven hours to complete. The Sentiers du lac Rouyn offer 32 kilometers of marked trails for snowshoeing, running, and hiking. Maps are posted at every intersection, access is free, and the trails are five minutes from downtown Rouyn-Noranda.

Activities and seasonal offerings

Parc-Aventure Joannès is a seasonal destination offering a variety of activities, including a large forest maze, mini golf, and an obstacle course, as well as mountain biking, hiking, and high-ropes courses. The trails at Mont Powell are designed specifically for mountain biking; runners and hikers are also welcome there in summer and winter.

Music is also a key part of the events calendar. For more than 20 years, FME has championed emerging and independent music through concerts in venues and outdoors, themed evenings, “5 à 7” events, and other formats. The Festival des Guitares du Monde features concerts and musical activities with guitarists from Québec, Canada, and the international scene. The Festival du cinéma international en Abitibi-Témiscamingue screens short, medium-length, and feature films, as well as documentaries, animated films, and fiction films from several countries. As festival dates change, it’s worth checking the dates of each event.

A seasonal visit to the Marché public de Rouyn-Noranda offers a chance to discover fresh local products and meet regional producers. Alongside museums, urban history, and trails around the lakes, it makes for a trip you can shape around your interests and the season.
