Elora Between Gorge and Art
Accommodation in Elora
Elora combines a striking river landscape with self-guided walks and arts offerings. When planning your trip, it’s worth considering which places and dates you want to shape your stay: Elora Gorge and Elora Quarry offer distinct landscapes, while arts venues and seasonal events add more activities to your itinerary.
Gorge, River, and Hiking Trails
At Elora Gorge, the Grand River flows past cliffs up to 22 metres high. Elora Gorge Conservation Area has two kilometres of hiking trails with views of the 22-metre-deep gorge. Tubing lets you experience the river below the cliffs; the activity may be closed during high water or in other conditions. Check in advance whether tubing is available.
For a comparison of trail lengths, consider two other routes: the Upper Grand Gorge Trail is 2.6 kilometres long, for pedestrians only, and offers views of the Tooth of Time, Lover’s Leap, and Elora Gorge. The 1.8-kilometre Bissell Loop includes a boardwalk and a paved path with views of downtown Elora. A self-guided walking tour of Elora has an estimated walking time of 75 minutes; its first stop is the old Armory Hall.
The river section between Fergus and West Montrose is also of interest to anglers: this section, which includes Elora Gorge, is a brown trout fishing area.
Elora Quarry as a Distinct Landscape
Elora Quarry is a 0.8-hectare limestone quarry surrounded by rock walls up to 12 metres high. A one-kilometre loop trail passes through cedar forests and offers views of the Grand River at some points. The quarry also has a large beach area with access to the water and a sandy area for children and sunbathers.
Shaded picnic areas and a few tables round out the amenities; the tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Elora Gorge Conservation Area, by contrast, has no swimming area. The two places therefore offer different ways to enjoy a visit to the water.
Art and Architectural History in Elora
Elora Centre for the Arts is housed in a restored three-storey limestone schoolhouse. The former classrooms now contain gallery spaces, a craft shop, classrooms, and artists’ studios. Outside, an art trail passes installations, benches, picnic tables, and bicycle parking. The centre is also home to the Schoolhouse Arts Collective, a curated group of more than 20 artists working in a range of media. Public opening hours may vary.
Elora Art Walk is a self-guided art tour through the village. Along the route, you’ll find public and private galleries, outdoor sculpture projects, and public artworks. Ancient Ways Native Art presents art, crafts, music, clothing, and artefacts of the Algonquin and Iroquois Nations.
Armory Hall, the first stop on the self-guided tour of Elora, was built in 1865 as a drill hall for training the local militia. A historic plaque is located beside the building entrance. Elora Post Office opened to the public in January 1912.
Seasonal Art, Workshops, and Tastings
Elora Sculpture Project is a seasonal outdoor exhibition in the downtown areas of Elora and Fergus, running from May to October. Check the dates for the year of your visit. During Elora Fergus Studio Tour, artisans open their studios in both towns over two autumn weekends; these dates also change each year.
Other offerings are aimed at small groups or people interested in crafts. Elora Pottery offers private pottery classes; an appointment may be required. Blown Away Glass Studio holds glassblowing workshops, and you should confirm availability before travelling. The New Grand Food Tour – Elora organizes private group visits to local food and drink destinations with tastings. Advance booking may be required for this group format.
Nearby
Nearby is the 47-kilometre Elora Cataract Trailway, which connects the Grand River and Credit River watersheds. Together with the trails in the gorge and at the quarry, it offers a range of scales: short loops at individual sites, longer routes, and a walking tour of Elora with a stated walking time.
