Kerwood offers different points of interest for a stay: Kerwood Park is about recreation, while the Metcalfe Township War Memorial and Wood’s General Store reflect remembrance and local history. Grace Canadian Reformed Church at Kerwood adds Sunday services to these themes. When planning, consider whether the park, a church service, or the area’s architecture and history will shape your visit.

Recreation at Kerwood Park

Kerwood Park is an active recreation facility in the community of Kerwood at 27816 Kerwood Road. It has two baseball fields; the southern field can be illuminated. Restrooms are available on site. The park therefore offers both baseball fields and a practical amenity for visitors.

The north and south pavilions at Kerwood Park can be rented. If you plan to use a pavilion, check the current rental terms and availability in advance; both may change.

The Tales-&-Trails Story Trail is also located in the park. Pages from children’s picture books are displayed along the trail. Where possible, stories from local communities may also be presented; the selection of stories may change. The trail has a different focus from the baseball fields: book pages and storytelling offer another point of interest. For readers interested in picture books, it provides an additional place to explore within the park.

Remembrance and church services

The Metcalfe Township War Memorial is a memorial to the First World War. It is located at 1719 Adele Street in Kerwood, Ontario. After Metcalfe Central School closed in 2010, the memorial was moved to Kerwood. Its present location is therefore also connected with a specific event in local history: the school’s closure and the subsequent relocation of the memorial.

Grace Canadian Reformed Church at Kerwood welcomes visitors to services in its church building in Kerwood. Services are held on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. As service arrangements may change, check the times before your visit if you plan to attend.

Architecture and local history

Wood’s General Store in Kerwood is considered a valuable and well-known piece of architectural history. The building and property recall the commercial roots along Kerwood Road; the brickwork is reminiscent of early 20th-century construction. The general store is thus placed in context both through its connection to the road’s commercial history and through a specific architectural feature. An overview of the Middlesex County Heritage Trails published on April 26, 2022, listed Wood’s General Store in Kerwood as a stop. Check the listing before relying on a present-day interpretation or access.

Kerwood’s development can also be understood in historical context: the community was settled along the CN rail corridor, which connected the larger centres of Sarnia, Strathroy and London. This context adds a perspective on the area’s early settlement history to the view of individual buildings.
