Little Current: Shoreline Trails, Parks and Swing Bridge
Accommodation in Little Current
Little Current offers several distinct landmarks along the waterfront and in the downtown area to help you plan your trip. At Low Island Park, the focus is on the beach area, swimming dock, splash pad and playground; trails and scenic viewpoints offer a different perspective. The park, trails, docks and bridge each have their own locations, making them easy to distinguish.
Waterfront and trails
Low Island Park in Little Current has a beach area and a swimming dock. It also has a splash pad and a playground. These features make it an interesting place if you're looking for a park with water and play areas. The park is also connected to the linear waterfront walking trail. This makes the park and waterfront trail part of the same wayfinding context, even though they have different focuses: the park's features here, and the route along the waterfront there.
The Little Current Recreational Walking Trail is about 7 kilometres long in total and can be walked in its entirety or in sections. It runs from the Information Centre along the waterfront and the Downtown Docks to downtown Little Current. This gives you the choice of walking the full route or individual sections when planning your trip. The route connects the waterfront area with downtown; its length and the option to walk parts of it give you a practical guide to the distance of your walk. If you're more interested in the park's individual features, Low Island Park is a different point of reference from this longer route.
Bridge, downtown and docks
Turner Park in Little Current offers views of the Swing Bridge, downtown and the waterfront. The Downtown Docks of the Port of Little Current are centrally located in Little Current and close to recreational facilities and the waterfront walking trail. The Little Current Swing Bridge and the LaCloche Mountains form the backdrop to the docks. The two perspectives differ: from Turner Park, downtown and the waterfront are in view alongside the bridge; at the docks, the bridge and LaCloche Mountains form the backdrop.
The Little Current Swing Bridge is the only road connection to Manitoulin Island. This makes it an important landmark for road travel to the island. The Little Current Heritage Swing Bridge is designated an Ontario Heritage Bridge. The structure therefore has two distinct aspects: its role in the road connection to the island and its heritage designation.
A viewpoint just outside town
McLean’s Mountain Lookout is just outside Little Current. From there, you can enjoy views of the North Channel and Wabuno Channel, with the LaCloche Mountains on the horizon. Its location outside town distinguishes the viewpoint from Turner Park and the Downtown Docks. The views also offer different perspectives: at Turner Park, downtown and the waterfront are in view, while the docks have the bridge and LaCloche Mountains as a backdrop. At the lookout, the views take in the two channels and the mountain range on the horizon. If you'd like to consider different perspectives when planning your trip, you can distinguish between the views in town and the viewpoint just outside Little Current.
