Quinte West
Accommodation in Quinte West
Quinte West can be explored from different perspectives through its trails, natural areas and the Trent-Severn Waterway. The trails’ lengths and themes can help you plan nature observation, cycling, walking and waterway history into your trip.
Trails by length and focus
Quinte West has more than 85 kilometres of unpaved, multi-use trails. One specific point of comparison within the trail network is the Lower Trent Trail: it passes through rural and urban areas of Quinte West and connects Glen Miller and Glen Ross over 17 kilometres. Most of the trail is non-motorized, accessible and bike-friendly. At the Trenton Greenbelt Conservation Area, by contrast, the Jack Lange Memorial Walkway is a 3-kilometre gravel trail through the conservation area; it is suitable for walking, hiking and cycling, as well as watching boats. This places a longer connection between two communities alongside a shorter trail with specific activities. Trail and surface conditions, as well as the accessibility of the Lower Trent Trail, may change; check current conditions before your outing.
Nature trails and viewpoints
The Bata Island Trail passes through a mostly wooded park and offers opportunities to observe birds and small animals. At the Bleasdell Boulder Conservation Area, a 1.5-kilometre loop winds through different types of forest and along Big Boulder Creek to the Bleasdell Boulder. At the Sager Conservation Area, a 1-kilometre trail leads up to a 30-foot-high observation tower with panoramic views of the surrounding area. The trail to the tower and the loop to the boulder therefore differ both in length and destination. If the observation tower is a deciding factor in your visit, check access in advance, as it may change.
There is also a clearly located trail in Trenton: the Kiwanis Riverside Park Trail lies on the east side of the Trent River between the two bridges on Ontario Street. The paved trail is 3 metres wide; parking and outdoor facilities have been upgraded. These details distinguish it from the nature- and gravel-focused routes. As the status of parking and outdoor facilities may change, check these details before your visit if needed.
Along the Murray Canal and Trent-Severn Waterway
The Waterfront Trail leads along County Road 64 to Quinte West and then runs parallel to the 5.4-kilometre historic Murray Canal. Quinte West is also home to Locks 1 through 7 of the Trent-Severn Waterway. Lock 1 is the waterway’s first lock station. There, staff explain how lock operation works to first-time canal users and offer tips for travelling along the canal. The trail runs parallel to the canal, while Lock 1 provides guidance for people travelling on the waterway for the first time.
Natural history and local insights
The Quinte Museum of Natural History uses exhibits and programs to encourage curiosity, conservation and learning about the natural world. “Fossilized Quinte” features local fossils from the Bay of Quinte region. “Rocks Revealed” presents rock and mineral specimens that illustrate the area’s geological history. The two exhibits therefore have different focuses: fossils on the one hand, and rocks and minerals on the other. Exhibits and programs may change; check what’s currently on offer before your visit.
Doors Open Quinte West is an annual event held in the fall that offers free public access. Visitors can explore the history of local organizations, businesses and attractions in Quinte West. Dates and participating locations vary, so it’s worth checking the details for your travel dates.
Market and seasonal activities
The Front Street Farmers’ Market is located at 67 Front Street in downtown Trenton. Various local makers, bakers and producers sell their goods there. Vendor participation and market details may vary by season; check current information for your travel dates. Brambleberry Farm also offers berry picking. Whether the activity is available during your stay depends on the farm’s operations. If you want to make a market visit or berry picking a firm part of your plans, confirm the details in advance.
