Lion's Head
Accommodation in Lion's Head
Lion's Head combines marked hiking trails, waterside experiences and seasonal activities. When planning a stay, you can first decide whether to focus on the trail, an easier hike, paddling or a program on a particular day of the week. The routes and activities offer concrete guidance.
Two ways to hike
The Lion's Head Trail consists of two loops: the Main Trail and the Inland Trail. Together, they are about 18 kilometres long and marked in blue and white. An easier hike begins at Lion's Head Beach Park, follows the promenade to the marina and then heads north on Bruin Lane, where the Bruce Trail enters the forest. This gives you information about the trail's layout and total length, as well as a second route with a starting point and a clear sequence of directions. Trail, parking and side-trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.
Water, harbour and beach
Lion's Head Harbour has 203 seasonal, monthly and transient slips along 20- and 40-foot finger piers. Slip availability may change. If you are planning to use a slip, check current availability.
A cycling route runs from Lion's Head Marina along the lakeshore, then inland to Forty Hills Rd. It follows the shoreline first and then heads inland. Lion's Head Beach has a sandy shoreline and a playground.
Paddling is also one of the activities in Lion's Head. You should paddle only if you are experienced or accompanied by a guide. One described paddling experience is kayaking beneath the towering limestone cliffs of Lion's Head.
Seasonal activities and local history
Bayside Astronomy is a free public program. During its seasonal program, it takes place on Fridays and Saturdays at the POD beside Lion's Head Marina. It offers short talks about the night sky, as well as observations of constellations, planets, the moon and other deep-sky objects using telescopes operated by volunteers. The seasonal schedule may change; check the dates for your trip.
The Lion's Head Farmers' Market takes place from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and until 1 p.m. on long weekends. It features products from local farmers and food producers, arts and crafts, and live music. Check the dates for the current year before including the market in your travel plans.
Local history includes a replica of the original Lion's Head lighthouse. A group of high school students built it in 1983 using the plans for the original 1903 building. The replica still stands at its original site.
