Sydney: Culture, History and Waterfront
Accommodation in Sydney
When looking for a hotel in Sydney, it helps to first narrow down the themes of your trip. Sydney’s attractions and activities range from historic homes and museums to theatre, crafts and waterfront experiences. This can help you decide whether to focus on city history, culture, the harbour or the offerings of local businesses.
History, Museums and Theatre
Cossit House is one of the oldest surviving homes in Sydney. On a guided tour, visitors can learn about the daily lives of parents and children in the time of the Cossit family. This offers a glimpse not only into the house, but also into the family life associated with it.
The Sydney Museum presents the history and culture of Sydney and its surroundings interactively. St. Patrick’s Church serves as a museum dedicated to preserving and promoting the culture and heritage of Sydney, Nova Scotia, and Cape Breton Island. The two museums focus on different things: the Sydney Museum centres on the interactive presentation of the city’s history and culture, while St. Patrick’s Church has its own mission to preserve and promote cultural heritage.
The Highland Arts Theatre is a venue in downtown Sydney and was formerly St. Andrew’s Church. It offers a year-round professional theatre presence, with a particular focus on artists, stories and songs from Cape Breton. The Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design is another destination for craft culture: its Gallery Shop features works by more than 90 Cape Breton craftspeople. The centre hosts exhibitions and a variety of craft workshops throughout the year.
Waterfront, Landmarks and Shopping
Sydney’s waterfront is considered the heart of the city. Visitors can stroll there and watch ships in the harbour. The world’s largest fiddle also stands on the waterfront. It was built in recognition of Cape Breton’s musical talent, making it a distinctive tribute to the region’s musical culture.
Shop the Fiddle brings together 18 unique shops and vendors on Sydney’s waterfront. Visitors can stroll along the Shop the Fiddle promenade and discover crafts, antiques, local specialties, food and souvenirs. Strolling with views of the harbour and browsing for goods are different ways to experience the waterfront.
Saturday Market and Local Businesses
The Sydney Public Market is located on Charlotte Street in the city centre. On Saturdays, the market offers products from local farmers and food producers, as well as goods from craftspeople, newly arrived entrepreneurs and independent businesses. Live music and international food are also part of the offerings. This mix of vendors and offerings sets the market apart from Shop the Fiddle, which brings together 18 shops and vendors on the waterfront. If you’re planning your visit specifically around the Saturday market, check the current schedule in advance, as market hours can change.
Cape Breton County as a Regional Context
The wider destination of Cape Breton County offers further nature and cultural experiences. The Fortress of Louisbourg is the largest reconstructed 18th-century French fortified town in North America. Visitors can explore the reconstructed town as well as several hiking and walking trails outside the fortress walls. Seasonal operations may affect access, so check current conditions before your visit.
Dominion Beach is a 1.5 km-long sandy beach. Supervised swimming is available there from July to August, subject to seasonal conditions. Boardwalks provide access to the beach and protect the dunes; windsurfing is also possible. Check current seasonal operations before planning a swim.
Canoeing or kayaking is possible on the Mira River in Cape Breton County. Opened in 1967, Mira River Provincial Park offers opportunities for camping, picnicking, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, cycling and hiking. These activities include both time on the water and things to do on land.
