French Road: Local History and Archery
Accommodation in French Road
If you’re looking for hotels in French Road, the area’s distinctive features can help guide your choice of destination. The small historic copper mine, the history of Old French Road, and The Barn’s commitment to traditional archery reveal different sides of this Cape Breton community.
History of French Road and Old French Road
French Road developed along Old French Road. Built by the French in the 1730s, the road connected the Port of Louisbourg with the Mira River and ended on the riverbank, across from present-day Salmon River and Two Rivers Wildlife Park. The history of French Road can thus be understood in the context of a historic transportation link between these places.
Much of Old French Road still exists today as a remote backcountry trail. The 18th-century road and the present-day trail represent different periods in the area’s history: an earlier connection to the Mira River and part of the route that has survived to the present day.
The settlement history of the surrounding area is also part of this story. In the 19th century, Scottish families established homesteads in the vicinity of Oceanview, Gabarus, and French Road.
A small historic copper mine is located in French Road, Cape Breton. It is another tangible connection to the area’s mining history. Together with the historical links to Old French Road, it offers travelers interested in local history several topics to help put French Road in context.
Archery and Accommodation in French Road
The Barn promotes traditional archery and introduces adults and young people to the sport. The facility is located at 21 Joanne Langford Drive in French Road, Nova Scotia. This provides a specific local connection to archery for your trip planning, without implying any particular way to participate or that visits are offered.
Fiddler’s Lake Escape Vacation Apartment is available year-round at 77 Joanne Langford Drive. It is intended for adults and is situated on a quiet lakeshore along a private road. The accommodation includes direct lake access, as well as opportunities for fishing, swimming, and canoeing. It is therefore distinct from a hotel. Check current availability before booking.
Directions to the accommodation take you from Exit 7 on Highway 125 via Highway 327, also known as the Fleur de Lis Trail, and Marion Bridge toward Gabarus or Forchu, to the entrance to Fiddler’s Lake Escape. About 12 kilometres, or approximately 12 minutes, after Marion Bridge, turn onto Joanne Langford Drive and follow the signs to number 77. Distance and travel time are approximate; road conditions and signage may change.
