Liscomb brings together a distinctive church history and the Liscomb River system. The Liscomb River Wilderness Area adds protected forests, wetlands, and open areas to this historical perspective. Two distinct themes are therefore central to choosing a destination: the area’s heritage and its river landscapes.

Church History and a Memorial Site in Liscomb

The Liscomb Methodist Church was dedicated on January 30, 1898. It was the first Methodist church of its kind in the Liscomb area. A memorial stone featuring images of the Liscomb Methodist Church and St. John’s United Church now marks the site in Liscomb. The specific dedication date and the present-day memorial site provide two different points of reference for local history: the church’s founding and the commemoration at the site.

Those interested in history will find a clearly defined local focus here. This local perspective can be distinguished from the broader historical themes of Guysborough County.

The Liscomb River and Wilderness Area

Along the Liscomb River, calm stretches of shallow water alternate with easy and turbulent rapids. The Liscomb River Wilderness Area protects the river system as a destination for fishing and canoeing in the backcountry. The different flow conditions and the activities mentioned describe different aspects of the same river system: its character and its role as a protected area for these activities.

The protected forests, extensive wetlands, and barren open areas of the Liscomb River Wilderness Area provide habitat for brook trout, a small population of Atlantic salmon, and endangered mainland moose. Both the river landscape and the distinct wetland and open areas are important to understanding the area.

Together with the Alder Ground Wilderness Area, the Liscomb River Wilderness Area protects more than 40 kilometres of a continuous river corridor. It extends from the interior of the Eastern Shore to north of Highway 7 and the Atlantic Ocean near Liscombe Lodge. The corridor’s length is the result of the joint protection provided by both wilderness areas.

More Nature Destinations in the Wider Guysborough County Area

The wider destination of Guysborough County also offers a range of nature and outdoor activities. The Guysborough Waterfront Trail starts at the end of Main Street in Guysborough, is 3.5 kilometres long, and offers opportunities for taking in the views and birdwatching. At Boylston Provincial Park, you can paddle a canoe or kayak on the fresh water of Irving Lake. The two destinations offer different experiences: the trail combines scenic views and birdwatching, while paddling is the main activity on the lake.

The free Theodore O’Hara Cable Ferry, also known as the Country Harbour Ferry, is another way to get around the county. It connects Port Bickerton with Country Harbour and carries up to twelve vehicles. In summer, it runs every 15 minutes; during the rest of the year, it departs hourly from the Country Harbour side and every half hour from the Port Bickerton side. As the schedule varies by season and which side of the harbour you are on, check it before travelling.

History and Culture in Guysborough County

The historical themes of Guysborough County range from a specific church site to the history of entire communities. Through images and objects, as well as conversations with interpreters, the Goldenville Interpretive Centre shares the story of the former mining community from 1861 to 1942. Sherbrooke Village, by contrast, features more than 25 historic buildings and costumed interpreters; it is the largest site of the Nova Scotia Provincial Museum.

The Canso Islands National Historic Site includes a visitor centre on the Canso waterfront and an interpretive trail on Grassy Island. The island is a 15-minute boat ride away. The county therefore offers a range of historical experiences: Goldenville’s mining history, the historic buildings of Sherbrooke Village, and the interpretive trail on Grassy Island.
